(PEE PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Thursday. In reply 'to a deputation at Paeroa, Mr. Sheeha i said the Government would not repudiate Mr. Broomhall's bargain if he kept his conditions. At a meeting of the Eden County Council last night the funds were distributed, but the Act was not adopted. ' Lewis Brothers held a meeting of their creditors to-day. Their liabilities on the 11th :March were stated as follows:—Unsecured in Auckland, £5452 ; unsecured in England, £29,702 ; Rational Bank, secured to amount, £20,649 ; total securities held, £20,000, ■ The ■estate is expected to realise seven.and sixpence in the pound. A committee has been appointed to examine the accounts and to report 'to a meeting to be held on Wednesday next. Grahamstown, Thursday. The. Governor’s reception was. a most brilliant affair, the whole community, both native and European, keeping holiday. The natives made a grand turn-out. The new country road, which was opened by the Governor, was decorated at intervals with triumphal arches. Business was entirely suspended. The Governor and suite, and the local governing bodies, were entertained at luncheon by the County Council. The Governor held a levee at four o’clock. There is. to be an inspection of Volunteers by Colonel Whitmore at five, and a banquet and ball this evening. : Rapier, Thursday. The Hawke’s Bay races commenced to-day. The meeting was held at Pakowhai, about two miles from Hastings. Tire weather was glorious, and the attendance large. About 3000 people were on the course. The events created great interest. The bookmakers were very numerous. The following are the events and the results:— . Maiden Plate, of 60 sovs., with a sweepstake of 3 sovs. Distance, one mile and a half. Weight forage.—Merlin, 1,; Day and. Martin,' 2 ; Darkle, 3. Five started. Champagne Charlie, Lallah Eookh, aud. Pakeha were scratched. Champagne Charlie was a hot favorite, and great indignation was manifested at his being 1 scratched, the bookmakers having made him a “stiff one.” This was an easy win for Merlin. Railway Stakes, of 30 sovs. Distance, three quarters of a mile. . Weight for age.— Mufti, 1 ; Lara, 2. Seven started. This was a good race. ■ Napier Handicap, of 150 sovs., with a sweepstake of 5 sovs.; the second, horse to receive 20 sovs. from the stakes!—Luna, 1 ; The Worm, 2 ; Ngaro, 3. Six started. This was a well contested race, Luna winning, only when close to the post, by a length. Selling Race,: of 40 sovs. Distance, one mile and a quartet. Weight for age. The winner to be sold for £SO, or for less with allowances.—-Robinson Crusoe, 1 ; Skysail, 2 ; iMerlin, 3. There were six entries. This was a very close’race, Crusoe winning by half a length. One of the jockeys fell in this event, but was not seriously injured. The Hack Race was the last event of the day, and was a very good race between first and second horses, and was won on the post. Hokitika, Thursday. Father Henueberry’s remarks from the altar, respecting' mixed marriages and other matters dealt with by him during his mission, are causing a great deal of ill-feeling between the Catholics and Protestants. The Rev. G. W. Russell has written a long letter to the Star on the subject, refuting a letter of Father Martin’s which had previously appeared. Mr. Russell was present on the occasion, aud quotes Father Heuneberry’s remarks as follows: “ Any marriage celebrated by a non-Oatholic minister between a Catholic aud a non-Oatholic was null aud void; aud a marriage by a Registrar was no marriage at all ; and any Catholic marrying a non-Catholic, without a dispensation from the Catholic- Church, and dying in that state, would go straight to hell.”! The Rev. Mr. Russell adds to his letter, “ I am prepared to take an oath that those words were used, and numbers I could mention would do the same.'” , Kumaka, Thursday. : Father Hennebery, through an agent, opened a show in main street for the sale of candles, rosaries, &0., and was required by the police to take out a business license, which was 1 done. , Gkeymocth, Thursday. A remarkable accident occurred at the races yesterday. A mounted constable liad dismounted from his horse, when the. latter, in, shaking himself, made a i pistol , in the holster explode, the ball of which struck a boy sixty yards away on the arm, and i parsed through another boy’s clothes without injuring him, and finally lodging in a third boy’s coat pocket. The occurrence was purely accidental. ‘ , , Cheistohdkch, Thursday. A conference of mayors aud chairmen of county councils was held to-day, for the purpose of considering the question of the manage-

ment of the hospital and charitable aid. Resolutions were carried to the folio uing effect :—That the conference does not see its way, to, accept the Government proposals in respect to the taking over the Christchurch hospital by the City Council, and that as regards the management of hospitals and charitable aid, the Government be recommended to form districts with boards, on which the Government, the municipality, and county councils should be represented, and that as Christchurch hospital has no endowment the Government be requested to obtain an endowment ’for it. • -■■■■■•- A - v. The nomination of persons to represent Tiraaru in the place of Mr. Stafford (resigned) takes place on",9th" April ; poll oh’l2th.’ , A large number of; visitors are here to-day to witness the races, which took ‘ place on a course four miles from town. The weather is splendid. The Maiden Plate was won by Harlequin ; Deceiver, 2nd; Undine, 3rd. For the J. O. Handicap, Hippo and Bide-a-wee ran a dead heat, Deceiver being 3rd. This was a magnificent race. Bide-a-wee afterwards walked over, Hippo having pulled up slightly lame after the dead heat. Flying Handicap, of 50 eovh. —Isaac 1; Luna, 2 ; Titania, 3. A bad start was effected, Isaac and Luna leading about four lengths. On entering the straight, Titania tried to overhaul the leader, but failed, and Isaac won by a length hands down. Novel Race, of 50sovs, distance 1J miles. —Malabar walked over. The Hack Race, of 10 sovs was won by Malabar. r Balcldtha, Thursday. An extraordinary accident occurred to Williams’ coach running, between here and Clinton to-day. When near to the Waiwera, aslight explosion occurred amongst the parcels, and immediately the coach was enveloped .in flames. There were five passengers, who got out with difficulty. The horses were unhitched, and a portion of the mail bags saved. Only the ironwork of the coach remains. The cause of the explosion, or nature of the material that exploded, is unknown.
