THE NEW KARORI ROAD.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sin, —In your issue of 13th inst. the report of the Hutt County Engineer, Mr. Eitzherbert, throws cold water on the proposed lino of road 1 via Polhill Gully from Willis-street, and without any definite basis of calculation he gives his J opinion that the cost would be £3500. The enclosed tender for the work for £IBOO, which I received at ray office on 4th March, will possibly help to dissipate the haziness attending that gentleman’s report and figures, and will assist the public generally, and the Karori and Makara settlers particularly, in arriving at a true estimate of the position and the way in which the Karori-Makara Board, and matters of the deepest moment affecting the welfare of the district, are treated with indifference and contempt by the County Council, on reports based on generalities, and without a shadow or pretence of professional calculation.—l am, &0,, W. PINNIMORE. p.S.—The new road is to be 20ft. wide on the solid, at a grade of 1 in 16. The present one is 12ft., and the greater part of it is at a grade of lin 10. Comment is needless. The plans, cross-sections, and specifications of the proposed road are at my office, Lambton-quay. F F W.F. The following is the lender referred to : “Wellington, March 4, 1878. “ For the construction of the road on the estimate as previously furnished by me, including all necessary bridges, and 9in. metal, the sum of £IBOO (one thousand eight hundred pounds), and sureties for the due performance and completion of the contract.—l am, &c., . “ (Signed) D. Picton Davies, C.E.”
