HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
The regular meeting of the Hutt County Council was held in the City Council Chamber yesterday afternoon, there being present Councillors Mason (chairman), Taylor, Chew, Monaghan, Lancaster, Speedy, Dick, Smith, and Morgan. ; The Clerk read a circular received from the Colonial Secretary, intimating that certain deductions had been made from the county subsidies for charitable aid.—The communication was laid on the table. The Council authorised the clerk to write to the Colonial Secretary, requesting that the Council might be furnished with copies of the Sheep and Fencing Bills which are to be introduced next session. Councillor Dick ‘ proposed that a share of the subsidy be handed over to the Wellington Highway Board, to be expended in the Wainuiomata Riding.—The motion was strongly opposed, and lost. ' Councillors Lancaster, Chew, Taylor,-Dick, and Monaghan were appointed a committee to inquire into the advisability of selling a disused road situate between sections 9 and 10, South Makara. Tenders were ordered to be called for for the tolls at the Hutt" and Kaiwarra gates, the tenders for the Hutt to be accompanied by a deposit of £25, and those for Kaiwarra by a deposit of £SO. The following reports were read : ■ “In accordance with a resolution passed at a meeting of the Council on the 12th February last, —That Councillors Lancaster, Monaghan, Taylor, Morgan, and Chew, attended by the County Engineer, form a committee to report upon the petition from Karori-Makara settlers (presented by O. C. Graham, Esq., Chairman of the Karori-Makara Highway Board) re proposed road via Pollhill Gully to Karori, met at the, office of the County Council this morning at 10 o’clock, and your committee report that they went over the proposed line of road on the 20th February last, and have carefully considered the prayer of the petition, and the report of the County Engineer attached hereto, which report your committee entirely agree with ; and that they are of opinion the present Council should not agree to the requests contained in the petition, viz., ‘ that the power to manage the roads within that district for a further period of two years from the 31st March instant, be delegated to them,’ and ‘ that the County Council sanction the formation of the proposed road;’ as the term of office of this Council will terminate in November next, and the term of office of the present Karori-Makara Highway Board will terminate shortly—March 12.” “ I have the honor to forward you the following report in re Polhill Gully line of road to Karori: —l. Alter examining the proposed line of road, together with the plan and section, I am of opinion that a good practicable line of road can be obtained, the gradients, according to the plan, not being steeper than 1 in 14. 2. lam of opinion that the cost of the construction will far exceed the estimate of the engineer (Mr. Davies), but not having any cross-sections of the work, I could not make an accurate calculation; but judging from the nature of the work required to be done I should say the cost of construction, building bridges, and fencing the line would be from £3200 to £3500. 3. The hill-sides being very steep, and the angle of inclination being very acute, none of the earth excavated could be utilised for formation. The road would therefore have to be cut entirely out of the solid. In that case the banks would be very high, and necessarily liable to heavy slips, which would add greatly to the cost of maintenance in the future.” Accounts to the value of £445 9s. lOd. were passed, and the Council then adjourned.
