WELLINGTON TYPOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND. TIMES, StK,—l observe that ; a meeting of the Wellington Tynographioat Society will be held to : nhditj at which some rather pronounced .propositions, it is understood, will, be: brought forward. Briefly,, they include the amalgama-. tion of all the Typographical Associations of the colony, with head-quarters at, Wellington, that being the most central city, and ;tho one in which the Association is just now, I believe, most powerful.. It is proposed that “ rules affecting the trade generally'shall ;be passed by' tile branch societies,-aud: be sent to .Wellington for approval,” and that a “Strike Fund” is to be formed (ahsit ointin). That such a proposition as the latter is put.forward. as a novelty will probably be surprising to outsiders, many of whom are of opinion that the chief end of existence of trade.unions is .the organization of strikes. This fund is proposed “to be used only when a strike is ordered by the, grand council iu Wellington on the recommendation of a branch society.,” I believe it is proposed to apply to have the Association ' registered as a “ specially authorized ” society under Sections 6 and 7 of the Friendly Societies Act of last session, which provides for such registration of. societies. established for .any purpose which the Governor may authorize as a purpose to which the powers and ; facilities of this Act ought to be extended.” The chief, objects to which the funds of the Typographical Societies are now applied are the equalizing of the labor market, by advancing small amounts for travelling expenses, and providing temporary assistance to members of. the trade out of work. These are surely objects worthy, of the benefits conferred by registration.—l am, &c., •A Member op the Society. Wellington, March 8 th.
