C. GEAIIAM, Town Cleric. 18th February, 1878. Electoral Notices mo THE ELECTORS OF X WAIRARAPA. ■ Gentlemen, —Having again been requested by many to offer myself as a Candidate at the approaching Election for the . Seat in the House of Representatives, about to be vacated by Mr. Bunny, I have the honor to inform you that I have consented to do so. Under any other than the present; political circumstances, and the importance which, in my opinion, exists for giving.' Sir George Grey a thorough and unconditional support;' I should certainly have refrained from embarking in a contest. lam quite aware that Mr. Lowes, in his published address to. you, promised to support the policy laid before the country by Sir George Grey. It has, however, been strongly represented to me that this gentlemen does not approve of, and, if elected, would not cordially support, some of the measures embodied in Sir George's proposals for the good government of New Zealand. In my opinion (I speak from the experience of more than thirty, years) the colonists possess in Sir George Grey a most able,, disinterested, and sincere friend, and, moreover, that he is the greatest and most liberal statesman that has ever placed his services' at our disposal. With regard to his new liberal policy, and especially to the readjustment of taxation, the country generally has approved of it, and I entertain no, doubt but that the independent and intelligent men of Wairarapa will gladly endorse it. The time has come when the burdens of the State will be more fairly distributed, and justice to all more readily obtained, by your electing a representative who will be bound to give Sir George Grey his hearty and unflinching support. Depend upon it, gentlemen, no act of mine shall imperil the return of a member holding these views. Sooner than do. so, X shall willingly withdraw at any moment from the contest, and resign the hopes of having'the distinguished honor of representing you. Lastly, my two objects are to assist to promote the prosperity of all interests in your magnificent district, and as one of your representatives to aid Sir George Grey in his noble efforts to benefit the whole of New Zealand.
