THE KATIKATI SETTLEMENT.
TO THE EDITOR OF‘THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. SIR,— In your issue of to-day you have a paragraph on the Eatikati.Settlempntiin which it is-staled th'at'Mr. Stewart was its' founder.' That is not correct. Mr. Stewart was the promoter, put T founded or 'originated the scheme. In a■ parliamentary paper- (D,‘ sa,' 1871', on page . 1) may be found a letter, from Mr Stewart to the then Minister for Immigration, TSTETOTKorEeT In* which he stated, the terms under which he.considered the Kalikatißlock should, be, handed over to him. Clause 18 is as follows —“Mr. H. W. Parnall, to receive a free grant of 500 acres, to himself, and 40 acres for each member of his family.; such! to, be given in recognition of . his services as originator of this undertaking.”. This clause was , subsequently . . withdrawn .by Mr. ..Stewart,'Jforh,.reasons....given ..in'.letter. No/) 7,, page;. sv,of the Hsame paper, 'viz.', that he was given, to > understand the Govern-' ment intended to recognise my,claims in some other' way. Mr. O’Korke, in his evidence' before a ; committee of the House ofkßepresentatives, stated “it had been the intention ,in, the first place to give Mr.- FarnalT this land, blit the Government decided it would be,better, not to. make any definite pledge as to land,' but sent him a telegram to'say his services iwhuld be remembered if he succeeded in inducing this body of settlers to come out.” jin the 'faes of great obstacles , and obstruction from those who Should have assisted me, and at great personal pecuniary .expense, and also expense 'of time,,I 1 , did succeed in getting this body of settlers out ; bufj up to the'..present, momentthe Government have not evenrecouped jne of recognising; my . services. ; The Katikati Settlement is, 1 1 believe, the only successful settlement, planted under, the . Public Works and Emigration-Act of 1871. -The following; trtble, cpmpiled from papers laid before Parliament last session, will show its superiority, as a bonfi fide’aettlemeht, over the olhers : ;
