PALMERSTON NORTH.
(i'BOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) February 18. We have had some considerable talk in the town lately about the great inconvenience of having the railway running along the middle of our principal street, and as I presume the promise of having the line fenced will eventually be fulfilled, we stand a very good chance of having the town thoroughly quartered. We have already rival ends of the town, and when a double fence and railway line divides the main street, we shall have the north rivalling the south portion of each end as well. Can any one, not having seen I almerston, imagine a fine square and good road cut up by a railway running on a level in the centre of both? I say nothing as to the shanty in the middle of the square called by courtesy a railway station. It has been suggested that the curve just above Roe s Hotel should he continued along the natural terrace, so as to bring the line a few chains behind the square, where a station suitable for the lequirements of the largely increasing traffic might be built. The line might then continue along the terrace behind Mr. Marburtous premises, and rejoin the present lino just above, where a pla .form might be put. I feel sure this latter woo'd be a great convenience, and prove a pecuniary success, as many having business at that end of the town would gladly pay fid. from the square. Home experience has shown how short distance fares pay. There is no doubt that as Palmerston advances this question will have to be considered, and as tin e rolls on there will be more dithculties to be overcome. “If it were done, when ’tis done, them ’twere well it were done quickly.” . .■ I had the pleasure of inspecting the budding which Messrs, Richter and Co. a-e erecting for their Hour-mill, and I noted, besides the solidity of the place, how comp .ctly planned ifc was. A siding will run the trucks right into the mill therefore even in wet weather the work of loading and discharging can go on with the utmost security. J-ho mill i* built to run two pair of stones ; there is ample room for another pair when required, but for the present only one pair will be started. In a verv short time the ManawataKangitikei District will have mills and grain enough to export Hour. As a sign of the times, I observe that three if not more of the storekeepers here are going in for “ extensive alterations,” while within four days we have at Foxton a meeting of the Manawata Jockey Cluo, at Palmerston a performance by our local Dramatic Club, and at Feilding the Choral Society give a concert. It is also X think a good see another piivate school started at the Terrace end of the town. This makes the second school in the town, in addition to our numer-ously-attended Government school. It is good news for sportsmen to hear that all game round about here is very plentiful this year. ..
