THE TELEPHONE.

(From the European Mail.) Some very successful experiments were made with the telephone on December 1 between Aberdeen and Inverness, a distance of 108 miles. Pongs and choruses were distinctly transmitted, and conversation was on at times with marvellous distinctness, notwithstanding the weather was unfavorable. The experiments were made with Professor Bell’s instruments. —A number of interesting experiments with the telephone were also made at the Brighton Aquarium on December 3, the general manager, Mr. Smith, having arranged for the hanging of one of Professor Bell's instruments between his office, at the extreme end of the building, and the band platform at the other end. Under ordinary circumstances the music of the band, which was then performing, is inaudible, owing to the distance and peculiar arrangement of the building, but, with the assistance of the telephone, the music could be distinctly though faintly heard, A more accurate effect was, however, secured by one of the band playing a piccoli close to the further mouth-piece, when the performances could be clearly followed. A number of visitors used the instrument, keeping up a conversation with their friends, and considerable interest was manifested at the * remarkable quality of the machine, in not only reproducing the sounds, but the facility with which it enabled the owner of the voice to be recognised.
