THE LATE MEETING AT THE ARCADE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sin, —Sir George Grey’s meeting last night has little, if any, political significance, as far as the coming election is concerned. It is, in my opinion, simply the outcome of ambition on the part of a few individuals thirsting for position. The electors of IVellington have read and re-read the views of the Premier, and it certainly does not require a public meeting here to enunciate those views. If the present order of things (politically speaking) is wrong, the electors have the reins in their hands. Let Sir George Grey remain as member for the North, and let the electors place Mr. Pearce in the position which he has already occupied with credit to himself and with the confidence of the electors. The applause last night cannot be taken as that of the electors of this city. Hundreds of electors were there who could uofc hear what was said, and hundreds applauded who have no voice whatever in the coming election ■, and, sir, I believe that although it may be said the electors are apathetic, still when the time comes they will not be led away by momentary excitement, but will view question dispassionately, and vote accordingly, I am, &c., „ Factotum.
