PALMERSTON NORTH.
(from our own correspondent.) February 11. The Government have opened a branch post office for the Terrace end of the town at Mr. E. Marsh’s store. This is another step iu the right direction, but we are still in great want of a telegraph messenger. The name of this town should certainly have been altered when it was made a borough ; but even now it is not too late to do so. On all sides there are complaints of letters going astray, letters intended for here going to Palmerston iu the Middle Island, and letters meant for Palmerston in the Middle Island coming here. Even telegrams and money orders are wrongly sent in the same maimer. And who can wonder at it ? The marvel is how the Post Office officials prevent them being ten times the number of errors. Imagine in a small colony like New Zealand there being two towns of the same name I It the change of name be made at once, it can be done with comparatively little trouble ; but should it be left for another year or two (and it most certainly must be done sooner or later) there will be innumerable difficulties to overcome. Why not name it after another great English Premier, and call it Derby? I understand that the Royal Hotel in this town has changed hands, Mr. Gilbert having disposed of the goodwill, &c,, to Mi’. Batchelor, late of Marten. The Manawatu Dramatic Club have fixed Monday, the 18th instant, for their next performance. Professor Jacobs, conjuror, ventriloquist, &c., gives an entertainment iu the Foresters’ Hall here to-night. The weather is still very unsettled, and there appears to be but little chance of our having any summer at all this year.
