•The 'following is a return-of the value of imports and exports at the principal ports of the colony during the years 1876 and 1877
The value of the imports for the whole colony in 1877 was £6,973,418, against £6,905,171 for the previous year, being an increase of £68,244. There was a large increase in the value of exports, which in 3876 were valued at £5,673,465, and in 1877 at £6.327,472, or an increase of £654,007. It will be observed that there has been an enormous increase in the exports of Wellington, the exports of 1877 exceeding in value those of 1876 by £337,063, which is at the rate of nearly 50 per dent. With reference to the exports from Wanganui, Taranaki, and other outlying places, it must be remembered that most of the produce of the districts is sent to the principal ports for transhipment. The declared value of the exports and imports of the colony for 1877 was £13,300,990, against £12,578,63s for 1876.
