The Right. Hon. Sir Michael Ed ward HicksBeach, Bart, M.P., the new Secretary of State for the Colonies, is the eldest sou of the late Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, the eighth baronet, by his wife Harriot Yittoria, daughter of John Stratton, Esq., qf Earthinghoe Lodge, Northamptonshire, who was born in. Portugalstreet, London, in 1837. From Eton he was sent to Christ Church, Oxford (8.A., 1853 ; M.A;, 1861), and in July, 1864, he was elected M.P. for East Gloucestershire, which constituency ho still represents in the Conservative interest. He was Parliamentary Secretary to the Poor Law Board from February till December, 1868, with the exception of a few weeks, during which he was Under-Secretary for the Home Department. When the Conservatives again came into office in February, 1874, Sir M. H. Beach was appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland.
