Auckland, .Saturday. ; Play was resumed at half-past twelve today, Robinson and Mumford beginning for Auckland, and batting to the bowling of Kendall and Spofforth. After two singles Robinson was bowled, and Wood came in. Mumford scored four twos, a couple of singles, and got double figures in the first twenty minutes, Wood getting 2 to leg off ; another single was. added by Wood. The rain then came down in torrents, and the game had to be suspended for a quarter-of-au-hour. When it was resumed 400 people were present. Wood got a single Teg-bye, scored from Boyle. This bye brought up 20. A single was then credited to Wood off Spofforth’s ,next. Boyle delivered a maiden and Spofforth followed suit, Wood hitting 1 hard to the vacant spot ; 3 was scored, and he followed this up by a good leg hit for 2 off Spofforth. Swanson was f clean bowled. 3—28-—l. Carter filled the vacancy, and a pretty cut by Wood brought up 80. This was supplemented by another. 2in slips. Garrett then took the ball from Boyle, and Wood slipped his first for a single, but skied a second off Spofforth’s next; which was carefully, held by Kendall, mid on. 4 (or 33. Wood’s 16 was compiled by genuine cricket. Lynch supplied the vacancy, and got a well-hit 2 off Garrett in slips, but Spofforth sent one of his balls flying 35 paces. 5 for 36. Yates coming in was greeted with a cheer. Horan let 1 go by, tor which run Spofforth sent down 5 maidens in succession. Yates playing rather eagerly got a nasty hit on the elbow from Spofforth, and was obliged to stop play for a few minutes. At the adjournment for lunch the score stood 5 wickets for 38. The game was re-started at twenty minutes to three. The ground was then very sloppy, and the wicket very much cut up. Yates got a nice 2 to square-leg off Spofforth. Kendall's next was too much for Carter, who allowed a straight one to pass his bat. 6 for 40. A. Whitaker came in, and Yates drew 1. Gleeaon was bowled by Spofforth’a first ball, the stump being knocked half a dozen yards. 3 for 42. A similar fate befell Whitaker from the first of Garrett's next. 9 for 42. Curtis came next, and got a plucky one to leg, and then took a liberty with Blackhnm in the following over, which was visited with punishment. 10 for 43. Lankham was caught for a duck's egg by Murdoch in slips. Gleeson directly after was clean bowled. 12 for 43. Russell followed, and was faced at the other wicket by Cotton, who fell a victim to Garrett. 13 for 43. Lawry came next,and Spofforth had 4 wickets in 3 overs, and Garrett 4 wickets iu 4 overs. Russell hit Spofforth hard to off for 2. Garrett spoilt Lawry’s wicket with the first ball iu his over. 14 for 45. Cameron then came to the wickets, and Garrett knocked his off stump down at the first attempt. 15 for 45. Buckland played an over off Garrett, and then' Russell' was bowled. 16 for 46. Dacre then joined Buckland, who got 2 to square leg and a single to longstop. At 3.45 there were quite 1500 people on the ground.Buckland made ,a good drive for 2. Spofforth bowled Dacre with a bailer. 17 for 53. Nolan followed, and Dacre made two or three good hits. Buckland played very steadily, and the runs began to creep up. 59 was reached, when a stinger from Garrett did for Buckland. IS for 59. Philsou stood only one ball, and then was bowled by Garrett. 19 for 59. Whewell followed. After two overs Nolan was bowled by Garrett, and ■a' similar fate befel Lublin before he scored. The innings were up|at 4 p.m. for 62.
