AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN v. AUCKLAND TWENTY-TWO.
Auckland, Thursday. The cricket match, Australian Eleven v. Auckland Twenty-two, commenced at 12.30 p.m. The Auckland Twenty-two won the toss, and went in. At 1 p.m. the score was 15 runs for 5 wickets. About 1000 people were on the ground. The game was resumed at 3.20, at which time the rain was still falling in a kind of Scotch mist. The wicket was very greasy. Lawry was caught at point the last ball of .the first over, and Cameron filled his place. Cotton then played an over from Kendall without scoring. Cameron hit Spofforth’s second ball for 1, which would have been 2 but for O. Bannerraau’s splendid fielding. Cotton followed this up with a double to leg. At the next ball Cameron very foolishly ran himself out. In the next over the ball was hit straight to Maun, aud held. Buckland came in, and got a flukey 2 to leg off his first ball, following this up with a single. Spofforth’s next was a maiden. Buckland was caught by Gregory at short-slip. 15 for 43. O. Dacrewas the next man, and Cotton.got a flukey single at point. Then two byes were run, and Cotton got another single. The Australians’ fielding, which had been very brilliant up to this time, became now less noticeable, several balls being missed. Cotton hit Kendall for 2, which were made into 3 by an overthrow. He hit up one. _gpnfforth’s next was caught by A. Bannermani mid-off. 16 for 47. Russell, the next man, hit the. first ball well to off for 2. At 4.15 p.m., Dacre and Russell, making a bit of a stand, 50 was up on the board. Dacre first hit a pretty 2 past the bowler. Blackham’s wicket-keeping was superb. He has not got tho show of Pooley, but appears nearly if not quite as effective. Spofforth's fielding at point was very smart. Garrett went on to bowl at Kendall’s end. In his first over a treble bye was run. Russell hit Spofforth for 2, and soon afterwards Dacre got 3 past longstop, and in the next over a fine drive for the same number, which elicited cheers from the Auckland men. Maidens, which had been as thick as peas in a pod before luncheon, now became few ami far between, but the byes brought up 70, amid renewed cheering. Dacre, after playing a capital innings of 13, was bowled by a “dodger” from Garret. 17 for 72. Dacre was loudly applauded for his good play. Nolan (lefthand) came next. Nolan broke his duck with 2 past cover point, following it by one past longstop; and a flukey one to leg and a leg-bye brought up 80; immediately after which Nolan was bowled by Spofforth. 18 for 80. ■ Russell cut Garrett beautifully for 2. A few balls later Philsou was clean bowled by Spofforth. 19 for 84. Lublin, the next comer, was bowled first ball. T. Whewell, the last man, soon made one, and in Spofforth’s next Russell was cleverly stumped, after a most patient and praiseworthy innings of 15;, for which he was applauded. The innings finished at 4.30 p.m. for a total of 85.
