A.Melbourne paper of the’23rd ultimo states that five justices of the pe <ce were engaged on the previous day, at the \Villiam>town Police Court, in investigating a case of seaman’s wages, brought against the master of the ship Windward. It was maintained on one side that the vessel had .deviated from its course in coming to Melbourne, while the articles distinctly stated that she was to trade for two years between Java, Batavia, and ports in the China Sea and Indian Ocean. 'The seaman maintained that Hobson’s Bay was not in the Indian Ocean, and that therefore his contract had become void. On the other hand, a number of experienced captains gave it as their opinion that the port was in the Indian Ocean, and ultimately the case was dismissed. There were eight other cases depending upon the decision, ami it was stated that they would be taken to a higher Court, as the men had been advised not to return to their ship. Another successful trial of the Wood harvester, with hinder attach d. lias taken place recently in New South time on a farm between Orange and Blavn»*y, or right in the heart of an excellent wheat-growing country. Regarding this the Bathurst Free Press says :—“The reaping on the whole was remavkab y clean, and making allowance for the inexperience of the apprentice hands who essayed to work it occasionally, and the unsuitableness of the land—the furrows in many cases being very de< j p and rough—the machine cut the crop and bound the sheaves ns neatly and with as little loss of grain as any of the farmers present appeared to desire.” New Zealand of tlie past, an 1 New Zealand .of the present are two very different, thins*. In the early days, when all was prosperity, and the denizen of the forest breathed the pure air of Heaven, the human frame and c institution had all the chance of robust health ; but now that thickly populated cities and towns h ive sprumr up with the attendant had habits and worse drainage, a remedy is call* d for which will counteract all the baheful effects of the existing and growing evils.
