The Herald this morning makes a circumstantial charge of jobbery, iu the appointment of ships' doctors, against the Immigration Department, on the authority of a local medical man. Gretmodth, Saturday. William Clark, a police constable at Ah aura, was brought oefore the Resident Magistrate on four charges of embezzlement as a gold receiver, and was committed on all the charges. A further charge of embezzlement was brought against him this afternoon, and he was also committed on that. The total amount embezzled does not exceed £2O. Chbistchdrch, Saturday. The land sales for the month of January were 22,458 acres, realising £44,916. They leave by the Hawea next Tuesday. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Robert Me Farlane, son of a grocer, was committed for trial for forging his father’s name to a number of cheques. The latter represent the sum of £6OO, extending over a period of nine months. The Board of Governors of the Canterbury College have acquired a site for a Boys’ High School. Timaro, Sunday. A fire occurred at some stables near Saltwater Creek, Timaru, yesterday afternoon. The fire was discovered by a servant, who gave the alarm. An entire and another horse in the stables were rescued with difiienlty. The Fire Brigade were quickly on the spot with their engine and hose-reel, and worked with promptitude. The fire was confined to the building and two or three sheds. The hotel, which is close by, narrowly escaped. The origin of the fire is unknown. The building was insured in the South British Insurance Company. The extent of, the damage done is estimated at £2OO. Dunedin, Sunday. At an inquiry held yesterday into the causes of the collision between the: ship County of Peebles and the French brig Active, in the English Channel, the certificates of the master and officers of the Peebles were returned, no blame being attached to them. The telephone was successfully tried on the telegraph line from Dunedin to Tokomairiro and back. The voices even were distinguishable at a distance of seventy-five miles. The Rev. Chas. Clark refused to lecture last night on account of the attendance being small. ... Port Chalmers, Sunday. A seaman of tbe barque Angus Frederick has been the victim e£ a murderous attack ,by a Japauese conk, who threw tlie man’s dog overboard. -Words and blows ensued, and the Japanese, getting the worst of it, seized a meat chopper, and inflicted dreadful blows on Simon Neilsou’s head, fracturing the skull. A second sailor was also cut across the arm by the Japanese, who was arrested by Sergeant Hanlon. Dr. Macdonough, who attended Neilson, found the skull fractured, and ordered his removal to the Dunedin Hospital.
