AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN v. NAPIER TWENTY-TWO.
‘ Napiek, Saturday. The match was resumed this morning-. The weather was very favorable ; rain had fallen in the night, and also in the morning, and while proceeding to the ground caused some slipper!* ness, but otherwise nothing could have been more 'pleasant 'than' the,'■•weather., Play was started at 11 o’clock, the score'standing at 53 for 5 wickets. Gregory and Spofforth, the uot-outs, took the bat, to the bowling of Liddle and Moon. Liddle threw a wide, and immediately afterwards Spofforth was clean bowled by Moon. . 54 (J—-15. , Blackham came in, and then. Gregory' ypas bowled by Moon. 56—7—1. ■ Garrett joined Blackham, and leather hunting was kept up for some time, when Blackham was caught off his hand by Moon, 84—8—16. Boyle filled the vacancy, and the scoring went on notwithstanding the changes in the bowlers. At last Rees took the ball, aud'essayed his slows, which brought on some sloggiug, but he wa» rewarded at last by catching Garrett, though a good price was paid for the success. Garrett was much cheered by the spectators' fdr his well-played innings of 52. 149—9—52. Kendall, the last man, then came in, and made 3 off one of Rees’ slows, 1 but was caught the next ball by Humphreys, closing the innings for 155. Hawke’s Bay made no delay in going in for the second innings, Ferris and Mayo coing to the wickets, to the bowl ng of Kendall and Spofforth. Scarcely aay stand at all was made until the score was 15 —S—l. Gilbert then came in and stopped the rapid exodus, and runs came more frequently ; and when Gilbert retired thescore stood 32—19—5. After that not much was done. Rees only scored 7, and the whole Twenty-two were disposed of at a quarter to 5 for 69. The Australians thus won by one innings and 33 runs. AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN, A.
