DISASTROUS FIRE AT AUCKLAND.
DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT CHRISTCHURCH.
Auckland, January 17. A disastrous fire oocurrediu Newton this morning at half-past 2 o’clock. The fire originated in the house of Mr. McAlpine, shoemaker, who was rescued with his family with difficulty, The fire rapidly extended to the Rising Sun Hotel adjoining and other buildings. Several houses on the opposite side of the street were much damaged. There was a high wind during the fire. The origin is unknown. The following is a list of the property destroyed ; -Rising Sun Hotel, totally, insured for £-100 in the South British, and £250 in the Norwich Union, and the furniture and stock for £3OO in the New Zealand. In the cottage behind the greater portion of the furniture was saved; the building was insured for £l5O in the Norwich Union. Prince’s grocer store was damaged, his loss is estimated at £700; the building was insured ia the South British for £llsO. At Streeter’s pork butchery nothing was saved ; the premises were insured in the Norwich Union for £IOO, and in the National for £100; the stock, which was uninsured, was valued at £100; Crawford’s, the chemist, was damaged, but not greatly ; the stock was insured for £125 in the South British, and the furniture for £l2O iu the Norwich Union, and the building for £4OO in the Royal. McAlpine’s shoemaker shop was totally destroyed; there was nothing saved ; the house, furniture, and machinery were insured in the National for £2OO. Kemble’s bakery, furniture, and stock were not greatly damaged. £lO will probably cover the loss. Mann’s dwelling-house, which was totally destroyed, was insured in the Imperial for £2OO. Mr. Springfellow’s toy shop was insured, but the amount is unknown. In the side street, Froude’s, the tailor, was slightly damaged. He was insured in the South British for £250. Alexander, the greengrocer, had his roof slightly damaged. Johnston’s bakery and grocery was slightly damaged to the extent of about £25. He was insured in the New Zealand for £7O. Hayes’ store and post office was greatly damaged. He was insured in the Smith British for £4OO, and the stock for £2OO in the Union. .The estimated damage to the building is £3OO. Greatlaw’s toy and fancy shop was greatly damaged. The - stock and furniture are destroyed, and the loss will be fully, £IOO. The was insured for £2OO in the Standard. The damage to the building is estimated at £l5O. Coulburne’s dwellinghouse was damaged to the extent of £IOO. It was insured in the Standard for £2OO. The Newton Hotel was ■ greatly damaged. It was insured for £6OO in the Norwich Union, and the stock for £3OO in the National, and the billiard-table for £2OO. Waddell’s bakery was damaged to the extent of £SO. The building was insured for £4OO in the New .Zealand. Mclndoe’s greengrocery was injured. It was insured for £IOO iu the Norwich Union. A break, with seven of the Salvage Corps and Fire Brigade, was returning from the fire, when the vehicle capsised, and one of them, named Godkin, fell on his head, and sustained concussion of the br In He was removed to the hospital. It is feared the injury will prove fatal. The total losses at the Newton fire are as follows :—South British, £IOOO ; New Zealand, £350 ; Imperial, £2oo’; Union, £2OO ; Standard, £BO ; Royal, £7 10s.
