Sailed : Luna, for Wellington, at 6 p.m. The Wanaka sails North this evening. Passengers for Wellington—Mrs Cartlay, Miss Aitken. and the Canterbury crew to compete at the Wanganui Regatta. * The time-ball may be used to-day for rating chronometer. A chronometer true on Greenwich time would show 12h. 30mfa. when the ball drops. Any difference is error, plus or minus, of the chronometer. The p.s. Luna, from Lyttelton, is expected to arrive here this afternoon. The barque Kdwin Bassett has cleared out for Newcastle, and is expected to sail this morning. The s.s. Wanaka. from the South, is expected here this forenoon. She will sail for Auckland, via the East Coast, to-morrow. The s.n. Wellington, from Nelson and Picton, arrived here yesterday at 8 a.m. She left Nelson at 4.15p.m, on Monday, arrived at Picton at 1.15 a m, yesterday; sailed again at 2.30 a.ra., and arrived in port as state I above. The Wellington will return to Picton and Nelson to day. The p.s. Manawatu left Wanganui at 4.30 p.m. on Monday with the schooner Colleen Bawn in tow, bound for Havelock, and arrived here at 6 30 a.m, yesterday. She will sail for Wanganui to-day at noon. The wool is now coming rapidly to hand for the Hurunui. and since she commenced to load on Wednesday last 1000 bales have been put into her. The Rangatira left for Napier and Poverty May.at 1 p.m. yesterday; Kiwi, at 5 p.m., for 'Napier and East Coast stations; and Wallace, for Nelson and West Coast ports, at 0.30 p.m. The ship Countess of Peebles, which arrived at Port' Chalmers yesterday from London, is different in her rig from any other vessel that Ims up to the present time visited the colony. She contains four masts, and is square-rigged on each. The schooners Pelican for Waitapu, and Mary Anderson for Pelorus Sound, got away yesterday forenoon. The barque Sophia R. Luhrs. G6l tons register, was loading in New York for Buuedin, Wellington, and Auckland when the mail left. She was to sail on or about the 25th December, with a cargo of oils and general notions. The October mail from New Zealand was only delivered in London on the 12th December, in consequence of the breakdown of the s.s. City of Boston on her passage from New York to Liverpool. The steamer was picked up at sea and towed into Queenstown. The tonnage loading on the berth at London on Cth December for India, China, and the Cape of Good Hope amounted to 58,102 tons ; and for Australia and New Zealand to 50,780 tons. The outward freights to Australia and New Zealand •were linn in London on the Bth December, showing an upward tendency : for the Cape porks they remain Coal freights to the Cape are better. For Indifi, Singapore, and Java rates are steady and firmly maintained. No improvement to report in homeward freights. The h.a. Hawea, from Auckland, via the East Coast, arrived in port at 8 o'clock yesterday morning. She left Auckland at 4 p.m. on.the 25th, and arrived at Tauranga at 8 a.m. on the 20th ; left again two hours afterwards, and got into Poverty Bay after a 24 hours’ run ; was away again at 4 p.rn., aud reached Napier at 5 a m. on the 28th ; left azain at U a m. same day, and arrived here as above stated, Had fine weather throughout. The Hawea sailed for South at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The schooner Ruby carnc in to port from Te Kope yesterday with a cargo of wool. Tho steamer Hawea brought down from Auckland three of Mr. Walters'racehorses. They are Isaac Walton, Venus Transit, and Hippocampus. The former was landed yesterday morning, and looked in good condition; o is to compete in three races here. The other two horses were taken on to Dunedin to run in the races there. Messrs. Woods, Hearn, Walker, and McGrath, who are to represent the Wellington Rowing Club at the’ forthcoming Colonial Regatta, will leave to-day for Wanganui in the Manawatu. Their boats, the Dolly Varclen, one palr-oared outrigger, and one sculling boat, will go with them. The Transit will bo forwarded by next steamer. Captain McGee, of tho a s.
