The Australian cricketers arrived yesterday, by the Taranaki, and were received on landing at the wharf by a large number of persons, who heartily cheered them. A carriage and four drove them round the town, and iu the afternoon some practice took place on the ground upon which to-morrow they will try their fortune with the Wellington team. We hope to see the Wellingtoniaus give as good an account of themselves as did their brethren at Christchurch; but the odds are- said to bo against them. A battle, however, is never lost until it is won, and we have no doubt the Wellington men will do their utmost, and we wisli them every success. There are some good cricketers here, and it is not unreasonable to expect that they will make a good show. At the time we write it is raining, but it is to bo hoped that before the hour for pitching, the wickets the weather will clear up. 'Should' the day prove fine a large number of spectators will doubtless be drawn to the, spot. , This afternoon and also the afternoons of Monday,and Tuesday are sure to bo pretty generally observed as holidays, and thq Basin Reserve will, doubtless be the centre of attraction to a large number of people, j The banks and insurances companies (following' the lead ,of; the Government' announce half-holidays on Monday and Tuesday.
