PALMERSTON NORTH.
(from our own correspondent.) The weather here has been very unfavorable for haymaking and harvesting, aud I fear that much hay and grain have been spoilt by it. If, however, we have some real summer weather ■even now I believe that tho crop will be a fair one. The fire brigade held their third meeting iu the Foresters’ Hall ou Saturday last, when rules were adopted aud officers nominated. It was stated that the Fire .Insurance Agents’ Association had intimated that they were unable to give a fire-engine and hose, as they had handed over all their surplus funds to the Wellington Corporation. I understand that Mr. W. H. Holmes from Te Aro is appointed schoolmaster here, vice Mr. H. Waite, deceased. If this be true, he will be a great acquisition to the plscc; more especially in a musical point of view.' ■ The members of the Church ,'bf Englaud held a meeting in the -church last w ek, at which it was resolved to offer Mr. St. Hill (iu the event of his being appointed to Feildiug) £IOO per annum for twelv’p months, to come, over 1 every alternate Saturday and stay until Tuesday here, and to hold two services on tho Sundays which he spends here. v
