REGATTA MEETING.

A numerously attended meeting of the Regatta Committee was held last evening at the Pier Hotel ; Mr. Quick in the chair. The only protest received was one lodged by the Mand against the Transit, in the Junior Four-oared Gig Race, on the ground that one of the rowers in the Transit was not a “junior.” Evidence was taken on each side, and it was eventually decided that the protest should be upheld, and the prize was accordingly awarded to the Maud. There being only two starters, there was no second prize in this race. By the consent of the meeting, a letter was read from Captain Bonner, of the Clematis, with regard to the prize in the Coasters' Race; but it being clearly proved that the. Saucy Lass had won it by time, and no protest having been lodged, according to the rules, the first prize was given to the Saucy Lass. In the second class yachts race a question was raised,as to the Pet being in the race, and it was decided thaf, as the rules had not been complied with as far as regards starting, she ■was out of it. This was felt to be rather hard by, the, owner of the Pot, as she certainly came in first,..notwithstanding her having started about ten minutes after the others ; but the decision nevertheless appears to be a fair one if the rules are to , bo adhered to.- The effect of this is that the St. Leonards gets the first prize and no second is given owing to their being only two. starters. . , V In the Ships’ Gig Race the Mataura’s boat

was disqualified on the same ground as that' of the Pet, tlie Hurunui therefore taking the only prize in that race. It was resolved that the remaining races—viz. Whaleboat, Volunteer Whaleboat, Senior and' Junior Pair-oared, Sculler* and Maiden Pour-oared In-rigged—be run on Saturday afternoon, the first race to commence at 2 o’clock. In the event of Saturday proving an unfavorable day the races are to be run on Monday afternoon, and should that day also be uupropitious, the races to lapse entirely, as it was thought that the general interest would be lost by further delay. It may be mentioned cn passant that Mr. Batkin, the secretary of the Star Club, presented to the funds of the regatta the prize awarded to the Maud by the disqualification of the Transit. Sundry accounts were passed, and authority was given to the treasurer to pay any accounts that might be immediate. . After the usual vote of thanks to the chairman, the meeting adjourned until luesday next, the 29th inst, at the Pier Hotel, at .8 o’clock, when all prizes will be distributed and accounts passed.
