The barque Glimpse, which arrived from Shanghai yesterday, spoke the ship Agnes Hall, from Rockhampton, bi>und to X.ondon. about 50 miles N.W. of Cape Maria Van Diemen. The captain wished to be reported all well The ketch Wild Duck is loading at Guthrie and Larnach’s mills for Waitara, the Colonist for Wanganui, and Atalanta for Patea. The Lallah Kookh was sold by auction by the Thames Steam Navigation Company to Messrs. Walker and Cunningham for about £IOOO. The now owners intend the boat for the Manukau trade. WEATHSb: IN I> [.CATIONS, At 9 a,in, Ye-terday. The barometer rose rapidly on Wednesday at places south of Lyttelton, and was rising slowly yesterday at 3p. in. Hard gales from the north-west and southwest have neen experienced. By the present indications further bad weather is probable between northwest and west and south. The barometer fell to 28'GO at Bluff at 4 a.m. of 16th. The ship Hurunui was taken In tow by the p.s. Manawatu yesterday and brought round to the Patent Slip for cleaning and painting. The s.s. Napier left Blenheim bar at 5 a.m. yesterday, and arrived here at 9 a.m. She went round to the Patent Slip yesterday afternoon to receive a few necessary repairs. The Government steamer Stella arrived in port at 0.30 p.m. yesterday. Silo left Portland Island on Tuesday, and called in at Napier and Oastlepoint. Experienced strong westerly winds throughout. The s.s. Easby sailed for Sydney at 2,30 p.m. yesterday The p.s. Manawatu left the harbor for Wanganui at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon ; and the s.s. Jane Douglas, for Foxton and Rangitikei, left at 1.30 p.m. The s.s. Ringarooma, from Melbourne via the South, will arrive in port this morning. She will sail for Nelson in the afternoon. The Hawea sailed for Auckland via the East Coast at 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The brigantine Hannah Broomfield arrived in port from Kaipara yesterday forenoon, after a smart passage down of 46 hours. She left ther** on Tuesday last at- noon, after being delayed there in loading for four weeks, and experienced s rang westerly gales, with heavy rain and much thunder and lightning, to making the Heads at 2 o’clock yesterday morning. Captain Dawson reports the arrival at Kaipara of the brigantine Enterprise on Wednesday, oth inst., and schooner Young Dick fr m this port on the 10th. Left at G p.m. ©n Wednesday, and had strong N.W. winds to arrival here this morning, as above stated. The p.s. Charles Edwards, from Nelson and West Coast, will arrive here this morning, and sail for the same j>orts in the afternoon. The s.s. Grafton arrived in j>ort at ten minutes past one o'clock this morning from Lyttelton, with 20 tons cargo for here and 150 tons for West Coast ports. She left Lyttelton on Wednesday afternoon, and experienced strong westerly winds throughout. The s.s. Tui left Kaikonra for thK port at 1.30 a.m. yesterday, but as .«he called at Waipapa to collect wool, she had nub arrived in port up to the time of our going to press, The Tui leaves for Foxton today' NOTICE TO MARINERS. EXHIBITION OF REVOLVING WHITE LIGHT OK PORTLAND ISLAND, iIAWKK'S WAV, Customs Department (Marine Branch), Wellington, 10th January. 1873. With reference to the preliminary notice issued by this department, dated the 22nd day of October, 1877, it is hereby notified that, on and after the 10th day of February next, a light will be exhibited from the lighthouse which has been erected on Portland Island, the position and characteristics of which arc as follow The Portland Island lighthouse is situated on the southern e tremity of Portland Island, which lies off the southern end of the Mahia Peninsula, Hawke's Bay, on the East Coast of the N- rth Island of New Zealand. The tower is 28 feet in height, is built of timber, and painted white. The light will be a second order revolving white light, visible all around the horizon as far as the land will allow. It will attain its greatest brilliance every 30 seconds. The light is elcvatd 300 feet above the sea. and, allowing 15 feet for the height of the eye, will be seen st « distance of about 24 nautical miles in clear weather, and at lesser distances according to the state of the atmosphere. From the lower part of the tower a fixed r d light, having an arc of about six degrees, will be shown in the direction of Bull Hock, which bears N.B. from the lighthouse, distant 4 miles. G. Orbr.
