THE WATERWORKS CONTRACT.
The Cheque for £2970. Mr. Sounders, the Waterworks contractor, has addressed the following letter to his Worship the Mayor : “Wellington, January 15, IS7S. “ Sir, —With reference to the payment to me of £2970, and the subsequent giving, by me, of a cheque to Mr. Hutchison, that he should send it to your Worship, I beg to state that I did so with the full knowledge that it might be presented at once, and that it would have been duly paid on presentation. “As there appears to be some dispute as to ■whether the money should have been paid to me when it was, I do not want to take advantage of any mistake that may have been made, and I refund the amount accordingly. “ Having always done my part to carry out the works as agreed, I have no objection to awaiting the result of the present investigations, and have no doubt that I shall in tins instance (as well as in the many other instances in which I have executed works for the Corporation) receive fair, treatment from the Council. —I have, &c., '.“Joseph Saunders. “His Worship the Mayor, Wellington."
