THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS AT OAMARU.

BY TELEGRAPH. Oamaru, Thursday, At the match to-day, the Australian Eleven v. fcweuty-two of Oamaru, there was a large attendance of people.. The day had been proclaimed a public holiday. The weather was good, but rather broken, and there were heavy showers in the afternoon, compelling the players to seek shelter once or twice. One of Oamaru’s b*st men, G. Millington, was unavoidably absent, and they suffered in bowling, otherwise there was a very fair team, captained by F. Fenwick. < Oamaru was first at the wickets. Play commenced at 10.30, Edwards and Lowe going on to the bowling of Sp ifforth and Garrett. . .Although the play on the Oamaru side was pretty fair, no stand was made, the only two wh« made anything being Neilson and A. Y. Smith, the former with 18 and the latter 11, both numbers being got by careful play. Very few duck’s eggs, however,' were mtde, nearly all adding something to the score. The bowling of Spofforfch and Garrett was remarkably good, although for the foraier the ground was not suitable, it making his bills hop too much, and going over the wicket. The fielding was also excellent. After lunch the Australians went in, the brothers Bannerman facing the bowling of George Fenwick and Edward*, The bowling was very good, and ranch admired. The score ran up to 40 by the rapid scoring of the two brothers, when a splendid catch offered by 0, Banneruian was refused by Taylor. When the score had reached 49. A. Bannerman was cleaned bowled by Lowe, who had taken the place of G. Fenwick. Horan-joined 0. Bannerman, when it was expected that a stand would be made ; but when the score had mounted up to 50, a fine ball of Edwards’ took Horan’s stumps. Spofforth followed, and played in splendid style, though his life was short, lie being bowled by Lowe, with only 2 to his credit. Murdoch followed with a duck’segg ; and then came Gregory, who soon gars Taylor another chance by skying the ball, which was again refused. Edwards made amends by bowling C. Baunermau amid much applause. The latter’s score was 45. Blackham then took the bat, and after making 9, was clean bowled by Edwards. Garrett joined Gregory, and after a few runs Sumpter caught the latter at slip, he having added 9 to the score. Boyle followed, and shortly after Garrett was caught by Tempest, having made 4. Bailey came next, and had a narrow escape of being run out, F. Fenwick taking the ball well. The score stood at 100, aud Boyle and Bailey were shortly after bowled by Lowe (Kendall, not out, 1). Total, lIS. The Oamaru team weut in again at 4.30 p.m. for the second innings ; but when time was called ten wickets had fallen for 43 runs. The game therefore was decided ou the first innings.
