Wind. —Generally between west and south and south-east at places southof Wellington; and between north-west and we*t and south at other place*. Barometer —Rise generally, but may fall at places between Kaikoura and Napier. Sea. —Heavy at Gre v mouth and Hokitika; much sea at Westpor* and Castlepoint. Warnings sent yesterday hold good. The barometer has risen at places north of Lyttelton during the past 24 hours, t«ie increase having been very marked in the North. On Monday afternoon the glass fell about two-tenths in the South, but has risen since. Strong gales are expected. The Ladybird arrived in port from Auckland via the East Coast at 12 o’clock last night after a very rough passage from Napier. She left Auckland on the 4th insfc., called at Tauranga, Gisborne, awd Napier, and left the latter port at 1 p rn. on the 7th; experienced strong south-westerly gale with heavy sea. and as the gale showed signs of increasing, it was decided to anchor under the Kidnappers at 3 p.m. Left again yesterday morning, and experienced bad weather all the way down. The s.s. Easby arrived in port from Sydney at 10 o’cl ck yesterday, after a long passage of Todays, caused by encountering unusually severe weather. She left Sydney at 11 p.m. on the 31st December, and with the commencement of the new year cleared the Heads. Experienced fresh easterly winds.'with head sea. which increased to a heavy gale from the S.E., shifting from that quarter in a very severe squall to E.S.E. and E., causing a high confused sea. The Easby being in excellent trim made splendid weather of it. shipping scarcely any water, and also making fair headway. At noon on the 4th inst. the weather ' cleared up. but the wind blew brisk from the eastward till the sth; thence light variable winds with thick gloomy weather, the barometer in the meantime having fallen to 29'30. On the night of the Cth the wind hauled into the S.W., and blew strong till making Cape Farewell at 7 p.m. on the 7th; Stephens Island was rounded at 3 a.ra. on the Bth; The brothers wire passed four hours afterwards, arriving in this port as above stated. a From Cape Farewell to arrival had moderate variable wether. The Easby will go South this afternoon. We thank Captain Anderson fnr flies and rei-ort. The schooners Hannah Barratt for Foxton and Cynthia and Rose of Eden for Pelorus Sound sailed yeaterdav. The steamer Napier arrived tn port from Blenheim yesterday afternoon, with a full cargo of wool for the Mataura! The Napier is now making a trip each day. She sailed for Blenheim again last night.
