The farmers of California, says the Bulletin of November 15th, are at last coming to appreciate the necessity of applying some kind of fertilizers to their lands. Much of the wheat land in the. State lias been cropped annually for from fifteen to twenty years, without the application of a pound of manure. The decrease of yield on such land admonishes the owners that they cannot continue the process much longer without reducing the yield below a payable point, and, therefore, without actually destroying, the principal portion of the capital they have invested in farming. A cessation of the annual cropping system and the adoption of the biennial and summer-fallow plan, is a great reformation, and by giving the land a chance to rest, and recuperate each alternate year, will postpone its final exhaustion. But this reformation does not go tar enough. In addition to use and an opportunity to' absorb fertilizers, there is needed some system of applying manures, to more surely restore the soil to its original strength and fertility.
