At the settling fbr the races to-night the following amounts were paid to the winners : Walters, £7OO, for Railway Plate, Derby, Selling Race, Publicans’ Plate, Grand Stand Handicap,, Mares Produce, Auckland Plate, and. Stewards’ Handicap ; M‘Gee, £360, including the Racing Club Handicap, Steeplechase, and Hack Hurdle Race ; Bolton, £2lO, for the Cup ; Horsefall, £l3O for the Hurdle Race aud Maiden ■ Race ; Edgar, Consolation, £lO ; Spencer, Hurry Scurry, £lO. The Canterbury cricket team went South in the Ladybird. John McMahon and John Goughian were committed for trial to-day for stealing £l2O .from the Nottingham Castle Hotel. The criminal calendar contains three charges of fraud under the Bankruptcy Act, one of attempted suicide, and two, of rape. The other , cases are larceny, embezzlement, and horse-stealing. Thames, Friday. The returns from the goldfields at the Thames and Coromandel for the year 1877 was 128,408 ozs. as against G9,8070z5. in 1876. The Moanataiari mine contributed about 40,0000z5. during 1877, and paid nearly £IOO,OOO in dividends. The Coromandel returns for the year are about 6000 or 7000ozs. Probably another lOOOozs. were produced on the Thames from tailings, mills, &c., of which no account has been furnished to the Press. ■ The Customs revenue for the quarter ended 31st December, 1877, was £1779 13s. Id., against £2195 Ss. for the corresponding quarter of the previous year. , The Premier while here authorised the expenditure of £SOOO, voted last session for the Ohinemuri road. . Napier, Friday. Mr. J. N. Wilhams put 5000 salmon into the Manawatu River yesterday. . J . Taueakga, Friday. The Hinemoa, with the Premier aud Mr. Sheehan, arrived at seven this morning from Coromandel. They landed at ten. They were received on the wharf by the Chairman and members of the Town Board, and were escorted up the wharf to the platform, where an address of welcome was read by the Chairman of the Town Board, and was replied to in suitable terms. The visitors were driven to their hotel, and received an ovation from the assembled Europeans and natives. The latter danced a war-dance. Sir G. Grey and Mr.
Sheehan were .deputationised till .lunch., time,, after which .they drove out into the country. This evening the Premier addresses the public in the Town Hall, aud to-morrow will her devoted to a Maori reception. He leaves,for Gisborne to-morrow evening. : ■ Dunedin, Friday. An arbitration case under the Public Works Act has commenced before Judge Williams and two assessors. It'is a.claim for £IO,OOO, preferred by Mrs. MoDerroid against the Municipal Council of Port Chalmers for damage and loss occasioned by carrying out the waterworks. _ David Millar died yesterday in his eightieth year. Ho leaves five sons, two daughters, aud forty grand-children. M. Joel, President of the Jewish Congregation, received by the Suez mail a letter from the Anglo-Jewish . Association, soliciting help for the Turkish sufferers by the war. An effort is being made to raise a subscription. The Hon. Mr. Reynolds addresses his constituents on. Tuesday night, when he will probably announce his determination to retire from Parliament. There is no truth in the statement made by a Dunedin paper that Mr. Reynolds is to be called to the Upper House. A man named Mutchell fell from a dray, breaking his neck. Judoe Williams, in banco, gave judgment dismissing the rule granted in the Tipperary mining case, with costs. Christchurch, Friday. Great indignation is expressed here at the summary dismissal of Mr. John Ol.livier, late Provincial Auditor. He held office for many years, bat received no notice of dismissal, nor any promise of compensation. It is considered a very hard case. The duties hitherto discharged by him are now, by the Public Revenues Act, vested in the Commissioner of Audit. Steps will be taken here shortly to establish a Good Templar Lodge under the R.W.G. Lodge of England. All existing lodges are under the American constitution. The Jewish Association are responding to an appeal from the London Association for the Relief of Distressed Jews in Turkey, and are raising subscriptions, which are coming in freely from members of all denominations.
