. In a case heard recently at the Sale County Court, Victoria, the plaintiff sought to recover £SO for certain slanderous words used towards him publicly in tiro lodgeroom of the M. (f.1.0.0.F., in the presence of a number of brethren. Defendant’s plea was justification, the words complained of being true in substance. The slander consisted of the words, “ You are a thief, and I can prove it ; you stole a bell off a horse’s neck at Cargo” It came out in evidence that the imputed felony occurred thirteen years ago, when both parties were engaged packing to Gra.ut, and that the defendant uttered the slander in exasperation at being fined for a breach of the society’s sick rules, at plaintiff's instance. The jury found a verdict for plaintiff, damages £2O. Many old sports (says the Nm Zealand Herald), will regret to learn that the wellknown racing mare Creeping Jenny, is no more. She died at Owen McGee’s stables in foaling twins, one of which is alive and hearty, but the other is dead. The foal is by Akeake. Creeping Jenny occupied at one time a pretty prominent position on the Auckland turf. She was bred by Mr. Daniels, and was known for a long time as Captain Cameron’s “Creeping Jenny.” She was by the famous sire Nutwitb, .out of Barbara. Nutwith was also the sire of,Black Kagle. At the time of her death Creeping Jenny was about nine years old. She was a valuable scud mare, and her loss will be felt in her owner’s stud.
