THE CIVIL SERVICE.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Siu, —I understand that some of the Civil Service employes have not yet obtained their back salaries, and the prospect of this being settled is indefinitely postponed. In justice to the gentlemen engaged in the Government service, this should have been all arranged prior to the departure of the Ministry, and I trust that their attention will be directed to it immediately on their return to Wellington. This is not the' only matter of apparent disregard of duty shown by the present Ministry, for a case has come under my notice where a gentleman was engaged last June to do professional work of a most complicated and extensive nature, on the understanding that a suitable salary which was on the Estimates for tlie post should be paid when they were passed.' The gentleman referred to gave the Government credit for sufficient honor to fulfil their promise; but lie has been only added to the list of martyrs who trusted to such a broken reed.'—l am, <kc., A.B.G.
