On the morning of Tuesday, the 11th, the Customs officers seized £9OO worth of smuggled jewellery found in the possession of a passenger by the steamer Wotonga, from Sydney. The jewellery was found inside a plaster bust of the Queen. A large number of petitions against payment of members have been introduced in the Assembly. Mr. Varley, who was refused the use of the Town Hall, in consequence, it is alleged, of making use of digraceful language in an address on the s icial evil question, has written to the City Council requesting that the discussion might be renewed. The Council declined to notice his application. The Corporation of the city of Geelong and the waterworks officials are at loggerheads on the subject of watering the streets. A case came before the local Police Court. The fireman of the Corporation and his workmen were watering the streets, when the waterworks inspector stopped the employes of the Corporation by force. A fracas ensued, and the inspector got roughly handled. The magistrates, however, dismissed the case.
