TELEGRAPHIC NEWS.

(PER PRESS AGENCY). Lawrence, Saturday. There was one of the heaviest floods in the Molyneux River yesterday that has been seen for years, owing to the hot winds bringing down snow from the mountains. Rain fell after the wind, and the river rose as fast as in what was known as the “old-man” flood, when so many lives were lost. No special damage has yet been ascertained. Dunedin, Saturday. There are now 254 patients in the Lunatic Asylum. Seven thousand pounds cash was yesterday refused for a quarter-acre section in Georgestreet. There are 200 members of the Otago Railway Employees’ Benefit Society, and the balance to its credit is £565. Oamaru, Saturday. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day Henry Andrews, a revenue constable, was committed for trial for perjury in a recent case of sly-grog selling, in which he swore he saw a beer engine in the house of a man named Comin. Bail was allowed. It is rumored that eleven publicans will shortly appear before the Magistrate’s Court, charged with permitting gambling in their licensed houses.
