The Bill for the colonialisabiou of the Land Fund was carried iu the House of Representatives last night by 45 to 12. The body of a man in an advanced stage of decomposition and covered with barnacles was found in the surf yesterday at Terawiti by John Lowry, a resident in the locality, who removed tho body (on which the only clothing is a pair of moleskin trousers and heavy boots) to a hut on the beach, and brought information into town. Tho head of the deceased is detached from the trunk. Tho body has apparently been some six of eight weeks in the water. The City Council advertise for a competent person to fill the office of Chief Surveyor at a salary of £6OO a year. There will doubtless be many applicants for the appointment. ■ We understand that Mr. Alexander-Camp-bell, who has been officiating as a clerk in the Wellington Police Office lately, has been appointed Resident Magistrate at Geraldine. A meeting of the governors of the Wellington College was to have been held yesterday, but there not being a sufficient number present to form a quorum there was no business transacted. A dramatic and musical entertainment will be given at the Catholic School, Boulcottstreet, this evening. An excellent programme has been prepared, and a first-rate entertainment may confidently be anticipated. As will be seen by reference to our advertising columns, Mr. Brunton, who has been preaching at the Theatre Royal, will lecture to-night at the Polytechnic Hall at half-past seven on “ The Second Coming of Christ.” At the R.AI. Court yesterday, before J. O. Crawford, Esq., R.AI., six offenders against the laws of sobriety were dwelt with iu the usual manner.—Launoelot Holmes, pilot at this port, was charged, together with Charles Beckstrom and Charles Howard, with assaulting Eederande Holm. Air. Gordon Allan appeared for the complainant, and Dr. Buller for the defendants. From the evidence it appeared that an altercation took place in consequence of an inquiry which had taken place in reference to the management and details of the work done in connection with the Pilot Station, the result of which was that the complainant Holm received three months’ notice to leave, another was reduced, and tho services of a third were dispensed with. This created some ill-feeling, which culminated in an assault, which took, place on the beach near the Heads on the evening of the 24th ult., when, as was alleged by complainant, Beckstrom struck him in tho face, and the other two defendants also handled him roughly. Dr. Buller, for the defence, called Beckstrom, who admitted that a stand-up fight took place between him and Holm, but the others did not participate in the fray. Further evidence was adduced, and the Bench considered the ease proved as against Beckstrora, who was fined £2 10s. and costs, with the alternative of seven days’ hard labor in case of non-payment.—On the civil side the case of Knocker v. Boyd occupied the attention of the Court foi some time. This was an action to recover the sum of £3O, of which £2O was tho price of a horse purchased by plaintiff from the defendant, who had warranted the animal sound, which, however, according to the plaintiff’s version of the story, turned out not to be the case. After hearing evidence the Court gave judgment for the defendant. Dr. Buller and Air. Barton appeared for the respective parties to the suit. — Judgments were given for plaintiffs in the following cases ;—Taylor and Co. v. W. A. Baker, £1 10s. 6d.; Plimmer, Reeves, and Co. v. E. W. Treseder, £32 13s. 4d.; Beauchamp and Co. v. C. Rowlands, £2l 15s. Bd. Air. R. J. Duncan sold at auction yesterday 80 acres of land in the Horokiwi Valley at 14s. per acre ; 178 acres, Featherston, at 11s. per acre ; 284 acres, Featherston, at 12s. per acre ; 202 acres, Featherston, at 10s. 6d. per acre ; 282 acres, Featherston, at 10a. per acre; 3 town acres at Alasterton, £275 ; 2 sections at Palmerston, £145. There were no offers for the Bunnythorpe and Foxton sections. A house and section in Wallace-street, Tinakoriroad, were sold for £370. Sections iu Vogeltown not offered. Land at Sandon, Rangitikei, fetched from 19s. to 21s. per acre. Two sections in Carnarvon, 60 acres, realised £lO5. There will be a large sale of furniture at Alinto House, Te Aro, to-day. The success which has attended Messrs. T. Kennedy Alacdouald and Co.’s sale of the township of Kiwitea, the valuable nature of which we described at length a week or twd back, has been something altogether out of the usual course, the equitable but novel principle of fixing a reasonable and low upset price, and allowing selection to the first comer, has evidently been throughly appreciated by the public at large, for they have taken up some 800 sections, varying in area from half an acre to nine acres each, the sale so far having realised about £3OOO. It will be noted from our advertising columns that the balance of certain valuable town sections, previously reserved for Wanganui and Christchurch, are now thrown open for selection for three days at the old rates, when they will be finally withdrawn from sale. Those parties, therefore, who desire to have an interest in so valuable a township as Kiwitea, should make early application for these sections. Mr. H. E. Walton, who has been playing for some time in Alelbourne, will make his first appearance in Wellington on Thursday evening next, under the distinguished patronage of his Excellency the Governor. He will appear in Jas. Albany’s great comedy “The Two Roses,” in which piece his performance of Digby Grant, Esq., is highly spoken of by the Indian and Australian Press. Air. Walton drew crowded houses for six weeks in Alelbourne by his excellent performance of this character, according to the accounts in the Australasian and other Melbourne papers, and wo have no doubt he will fill the Theatre Royal during his short stay with ns. The Waxworks Exhibition, which was opened at the Odd Fellows’ Hall last evening, drew a large number of visitors. The collection of figures is varied, extensive, and lifelike, and great care appears to have been bestowed on their grouping. Amongst the most conspicuous of the figures are those of Queen Victoria aud the Royal family of Great Britain, Isabella Queen of Spain, Eugenie late Empress of the French, Alary Queen of Scots, Prince Bismarck, George Peabody the philanthropist, Madame Dupree the celebrated French fortune teller, Stanley and Livingstone, the Siamese Twins, Orton the Tichborne Claimant, Artemus Ward, and other celebrities. A group of some of the principal actors in tho Poverty Bay massacre is exhibited, and “ Sullivan,” Airs. Wooloock (of Moonta, South Australia), William Page (ot Mouut Gambier), and other uoted criminals, are also on view. Mr. A. Barnett will oiFer for sale at auction to-day several valuable sections of land at thoXJpper Hutt, Palmerston, Woodvillc, and Rangitikei, after winch a large and weli-aelected collection of chroinos and oleographs will be submitted to public competition.
