She left Wanganui at 2.30 p.m, on Wednesday, crossed the bar at 3.50 p.m., and arrived here at 7.30 a.m. yesterday. Experienced light variable winds with heavy beam sea throughout the passage. The Manawatu will sail for Wanganui at noon to-day. The Hawea. from the North, will be here to-day. She goes South at 3 p. m. The Thames, ketch, for Pelorus Sound, sailed yesterday. The Tui, from Kaikoura and Lyttelton, will be here to-night. She will sail for Foxton to-morrow. The Government steamer Stella has returned to port from The Brothers and Cape Farewell. The schooners Aurora, for East Coast, and Pelican, for Pelorus Sound, sailed yesterday. THE SHIP WAITARA. The Waitara was picked up off the Heads at 5 o’clock yesterday by the p.s. Manawatu. and towed into port. We have previously given an outline of the Waitara's passage from London to Nelson, to the effect that she left Plymouth on the 24th August, after embarking emigrants, and was favored with fair weather to the Bay of Biscay, where she was beset by a series of southerly gales, which retarded her progress to the Line, crossing it on the 22nd day out. The N.E. and S.E. trades were of a moderate nature only. She rounded the Cape on the 14th October, and between the parallels of 41$deg. and 42deg. ran down her easting, favored meanwhile with moderate westerly breezes. She sighted Cape Farewell on the 20th instant, but for four days previously a very heavy fog was experienced. She reached Nelson on the 21st, disembarked passengers, and sailed on Sunday night was off the Headson Monday morning, and same night was boarded by Pilot Holm-s. She made an attempt to beat in next day, but the wind wa< found to be blowing too hard to make any progress, and consequently shn lay off till yesterday morning, when she was met by the Manawatu, which tow edher into port, arriving as above stated. The Waitara brought to Nelson a number of Government immigrants, and from all we can learn they speak well of the treatment they received from Captain Caborno and Dr. Dunkley, surgeon-superintendent, and the oflicers of the ship, during the passage out. The doctor is well and favorably known In this colony, having visited it no less than five times in charge of immigrants. His last visit was to this port, when he came in the "Waimea, and it will be remembered he then received some valuable testimonials from tbe passengers for his skill and kindness towards them. During the passage of the V/airoa a number of concerts, readings, and other little incidents which tended to make the trip pleasant, were held, and altogether the un to Nelson , was a really enjoyable one. The Waitara has 700 tons cargo on board for this port, and on discharge of It she will go to the Bluff to load for London.
