PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Wednesday. The Star says if Sir Julius Vogel retires from the Agent-Generalship he will probably become connected with the Colonial Bank in London. Gbahamstowh, Wednesday. Reha Aperahama, a native f:omTeAroha, is here as a representative from Ngatirahira hapu, wishing to make terms with the Europeans for leasing the Aroha Block for mining and other purposes. This hapu have hitherto been opposed to selling or leasing. They want to deal with Europeans directly. Gisboenb, Wednesday. The local Press lately wrote hopefully of the prospects of the East Coast district being opened up through Mr. Mackay’s arrangements already entered into with the natives. To day’s Herald says :—“ Considering the immense area of land in the hands of the natives in this part of the country, which is at present totally unproductive, and utterly beyond the power of its owners to utilise for pastoral or agricultural purposes, it is high time indeed that a change had taken place, and the country was opened up. The natives themselves have formed committees to decide what lauds will be sold and what retained.” Mr. Sheehan’s speech on native affairs was well received here. The natives in this part of the country compare Sir George Grey to an old Maori chief whose mana has departed, and who endeavors to use all the powers of necromancy possessed by the priests to restore him to his former greatness. Mr. Crawford has been re-elected Mayor of Gisborne to-day unopposed. A public meeting was held last night to decide on means for supplying the town with water. It was proposed to sink artesian wells.
Hokitika, Wednesday. Mr. F. A. Learmonth has been elected Mayor without opposition. Wanganui, Wednesday.
A meeting of journeymen carpenters was held; here, and it was resolved that the rate of wages after Ist December should be 12s. per day. A deputation was appointed to wait upon the masters with the result of the meeting. 'Mr. W. H. Watt was elected Mayor without opposition. Blenheim, Wednesday.
At an inquiry into the late fire at Thompson’s mill, the verdict was that there was no evidence to show how it originated. The Marlborough Agricultural Show to-day was a fair success. The shesp were particularly good, and also the cattle. The attendance was hardly what was expected. Westport, Wednesday. Mr. Robert Whyte has been elected Mayor without opposition.

Christchdrch, Wednesday. Yon Polnitz, late secretary of the Acclimatization Society, was arrested to-day on a charge of embezzling the funds of the society. It is suspected that he sold trout, hare?, &c,, and pocketed the money. It has been decided to ask Government to proclaim December 16, our anniversary day, as a holiday here. Timaru, Wednesday. The present Mayor, Mr. George Cliff, was nominated for the ensuing year, and being the only person put in nomination he was therefore elected. At the annual meeting of the Timarau Agricultural and Pastoral Association this afternoon a large balance to credit was announced, and it was resolved that in future money prizes and not plate should be given. Mr. Davidson was elected president, Mr. John Macintosh vice-president, and Mr. E. H. Sale secretary and treasurer. A large and influential committee of management was appointed, and a committee was formed to report to a meeting next month on a new site for a show ground, the present one being too small and inconvenient. Ddnedin, Wednesday. The Times and Witness offices are announced for sale by auction, the proprietors contemplating erecting new offices. A child, sixteen months old, was strangled accidentally at Halfway Bush, by getting its head fixed in a rope-loop used for fixing a temporary gateway, and was quite dead when found. The Minister of Justice has declined the request of the City Council to constitute a Mayor’s Court. The City Council has agreed to the appointment of two professional accountants to report upon the system of bookkeeping hitherto adopted, and the efficiency of the Council’s officers. The Star says the policy of the Government may be summarised practically under three heads—increase of Colonial Indebtedness ; Generalisation of the Land Fund ; Promise of a universal Utopia. The Governor has assented to the agreement between the City Corporation and David Proudfoot, the promoter of the city tramways. Nelson, Wednesday. The Horticultural Show yesterday and today was a great success. The show of roses was magnificent, about 300 being shown. Twelve hundred people attended yesterday. Mr. J. R. Dodson has been elected Mayor of the city of Nelson. He was the only person nominated. Invercargill, Wednesday. Levy’s first concert last night was a great success. H chad a most enthusiastic reception, and his cornet playing was generally pronounced something wonderful. The other members of the company also made a favorable impression upon the audience. Balcldtha, Tuesday. The annual show of the Clutha Agricultural and Pastoral Society to-day was by far the best ever seen in the district. The weather was delightful and the attendance very large. The horses and cattle showed great improvement on former shows, both as regards quantity and quality. The N.Z. and A.L. Company had some fine shorthorn stock on the ground, and gained first prize for bull, any age ; J. McDonald taking second, and George Scett third prizes. Shorthorns : Cow, any age—First prize, N.Z. and A.L. Company. Ayrshire bulls, any age—First prize, Thomas Bowie. Cow, any age—First prize, Robinson and Co., Tokomairiro. Draught entire horse— First prize, Craig and Wylie. Bryce Brothers, Lovells Flat, carried all before them in draught mares. There was a splendid show of draught stock both old and young. Coombe’s Flying Dutchman took first prize for thoroughbred horses. In sheep, merino ram, any age—First prize, N.Z. and A.L. Company, Waitepeka Station. Lincoln - ram, any age—First prize, N.Z. and A.L. Company. Romney Marsh ram, any age—First prize, W. Telford. There was a good show ef poultry, and that of dairy produce was also excellent. The whole arrangements were satisfact ry. A bazaar in aid of the funds of the Wesleyan Church was well patronised throughout the day. The river is falling slightly. There was no dam .ge sustained to the township, but a considerable portion of Inch Clutha was submerged, and the crops will suffer much.
