(PER PRESS AGENCY). Auckland, Monday. .. H. S. Meyers, merchant, was committed, for trial on three charges of fraud, in connection with insolvency. The prosecutor stated another charge would be preferred in the Supreme Court. The defence was reserved. ■ Mr. Firth has returned from distributing salmon. Fifty thousand were successfully, deposited in the upper reach of the Wairoa, in the Kaipara District. Henry Brett, and Frederick Larkins of McArthur and Co., are the only candidates nominated for Mayor. Grahamstown, Monday. The Mayor has declined to call a public meeting to express an opinion on the political situation, giving as his reason that as the business of such meeting would be the discussion of general politics, he, as Mayor, should keep aloof, and he therefore declined officially to do anything which might be construed into political bias in a municipal functionary. Taupo, Alonday. The survey of Bowen township, the first in the Taupo country, is nearly completed, and it should soon be in the market. The late native difficulty re surveys at Opepe has been settled. Bluff, Monday. The steamer Gazelle has returned from the Auckland Islands. The expedition did not recover the gold from the wreck of the General Grant, and the search has been abandoned. Dunedin, Monday. A rowing match took place on Saturday between the crews of the Union Steam Ship Company and of the Otago Rowing Club. The latter won by a length. This morning, in the Police Court, Mr. Watt said some remarks were lately mule in the papers aud by members of the Synod with regard to the publication of indecent proceedings. He had been no party to such publication, and had kept the Court clear. He noticed the matter now because somebody in the Daily. Times had censured him for not clearing the Court on a recent occasion, but he had not done so, because the case was one of summary jurisdiction, and he had no power to clear the Court. Balolctha, Alonday. The river is heavily flooded, and has commenced to overflow its banks. It is still rising. No danger to town is anticipated. Lawrence, Alonday. Alessrs. R. Wi’liams aud J. Harrop were nominated for the Mayoralty to-day. Air. Horace Bastings was requested to stand, but declined. Alining matters at the cement claims, Blue Spur, are very brisk, and a large amount of gold is being obtained. Prospecting for reefs in that neighborhood is going on briskly. Scarlet fever is still very prevalent. Riverton, Alonday. A public meeting was held here at noon today, which was well attended. A resolution was passed in support of the present Ministry. Mr. Hodgkinson was complimented for his conscientious support of his party, past and present. In the event of the Grey Ministry being defeated the meeting considered a dissolution necessary. Christchurch, Alonday. The secretary of the Acclimatisation Society states, in reply to Saturday’s telegram, that the 50,000 , ova received here were forwarded by the Auckland Society as a part of ova specially ordered for Auckland and Canterbury societies independent of Government, and paid for by these societies ; also, that he received advices from a Government official, Wellington, to the effect that a box marked “ 4, No. 33,” containing 100,000 ova, had been forwarded to Lyttelton for the Canterbury Society ; but this box never arrived. The Hon. J. S. Peacock, now in Wellington, has been furnished with all telegrams, &c., referring to the matter, with a request that he should inquire fully iuto it. The City Guards, in a match with the Dunedin City Guards, 10 men aside, 5 shots at each range, 200, 400, and 600 yards, scored 514 ; Dunedin, 419. Walton, a comedian from Alelbourne, made his debut at the Theatre Royal on Saturday night with great success. Two candidates have been nominated for the Mayoralty—Air. Gapes, the present Alayor, and Air. Henry Thomson, an old member of the City Council. A close contest is expected. The present Alayor is regarded as the working men’s candidate, and will be strongly supported by them, while Thomson will have the support of the influential citizens. Timaru, Monday. At a meeting of the Harbor Board to-day, the chairman read a telegram from Sir George Grey, naming Messrs. Henderson and Heale, civil engineers, as a commission to examine and report upon plaus for a breakwater. A resolution was passed suggesting that the commission visit Timaru. A special meeting of the Board is to be called when the report of the commission is received. Nelson, Alonday. A fatal accident occurred yesterday afternoon to Air. Alajoribauks, a resident at Waimea, who when driving home stooped forward to whip his horse, but lost his balance and fell from the box, alighting on his head and rupturing a blood vessel in the brain. He was driven home, and died two hours after. The salmon ova are all hatched ; the fish are strong and healthy. Blenheim, Alonday. Thompson’s sawmill at Waitoliai Valley was burnt on Sunday. The loss is about £I6OO. The cause of the fire is unknown. The insurances are—lmperial, £750 ; Victoria, £SOO. An inquiry will bo held ou Tuesday. Air. H. C. Fell was the only person nominated for Mayor of Blenheim, consequently he was declared elected. Westport, Alonday. A young irau named King, one of the Karamea settlers, was drowned on Saturday while fording the Ngakawau River. The accident arose from the leading rope of a laden mule being tied to the saddle of the horse King was riding. The mule getting out of its depth dragged the horse after him, and deceased slipping into the strong current, was carried seaward. The body has not been recovered. Hokitika, Alonday. A good number of entries have already been received for the Hokitika races. The nominations close to-morrow evening.
