(per press agency). New Plymouth, Thursday. The total amount collected towai-ds the Indian Famine Fund up to date is £354. ‘ Nelson, Thursday.

A largely attended public meeting was held in the Provincial Hall last night to consider the present political situation. The Mayor was in the chair. The following resolutions were carried almost unanimously ;—Mr. Levestam proposed, and Mr. Acton Adams seconded, —“ That in the opinion of this meeting the interests both of the colony and of the district would be best served by Parliament giving Sir George Grey a fair trial.” Mr. Graham proposed, and Mr. Howell seconded, —“ That in the opinion of this meeting, in the present disorganised state of the House of Eepresentatives, owing to parties being so evenly balanced, an appeal to the people is the only satisfactory way and constitutional course and, —“ That copies of these resolutions be forwarded to the city representatives and Sir George Grey.” Mr. Arthur Atkinson moved, as an addition to the first resolution, the words “ so that the charges made against the Government may be proved or disproved this session but this was rejected. Christchurch, Thursday.

The crops are still suffering from want of rain, and late sown wheat on light lands is nearly ruined, but the early wheat generally is still looking well. Potatoes have been seriously damaged by frosts. The annual session of the Grand Lodge of Good Templars will be held at Timaru, commencing on the second Tuesday in December. The annual show of the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association commenced today. The weather was gloriously fine, and the attendance large, about 5000 people being present. The show of sheep, horses, cattle, and dairy produce was the grandest ever seen in Otago. The following is a list of the cups awarded yesterday : —Class B (Ayrshire), 20 guineas and cup, Fleming and Hedley. Class F (general cattle), 10 guineas and cup, T. D. Duncan. Class B (bloodstock), 10 guineas and cup, Alex. Paterson. Class H (merino), 20 guineas and cup, Oakden and Brown. Class J (Leicester), 20 guineas and cup, Gillies and Street. Class J (Lincoln), 20 guineas and cup, Mr. Holmes. Class R (Romney Marsh), silver cup and 20 guineas. Dr. Webster. Class O (dairy produce), 10 guineas and cup. Miss Robertson. Class G (agricultural implements), 10 guineas and cup, Jack, Steele, and Hendry. Class L (grain, seeds, etc.), 10 guineas and cup, John Falconer. Draught horses and shorthorn cattle will be judged to-morrow. Dunedin, Thursday.

This month’s Jurist states that the Appeal Court case Eliott v. Branchley was settled some time ago by the payment of the debt and costs, and that some other cases which have gone to the Court of Appeal were also settled, and are being argued in a friendly manner by arrangements between the solicitors.
