COMMERCIAL.

The Customs duties collected at the port of Wellington for the week ending November S, were as follows:

The import trade continues moderately brisk, and a fair amount of business is doing both in town and country. Prices remain unchanged, but show a downward tendency owing to the large accumulation of stocks in almost every description of imported goods, which the cargoes of the Zealandia and St. Leonards cannot fail to increase. The May arrived on the 7th from Hongkong and Foochow, with a full cargo of new season’s tea and Eastern produce for this port, • In colonial produce, the result of overstocking this market is manifest in the low prices obtained for most articles coming under this head. Keg butter is absolutely unsaleable at any figure, and holders would be glad to clear out their stocks —held some months back for lid to 12d per lb—at 4d to Gd per lb. Cheese continues in full supply at 6Jd to 7d per lb. Hams and bacon overstocked and difficult to place. Canterbury and Oamaru flour have not improved in quotations; best brands are selling at £l6 10s per ton. At Mr. G-. Thomas' sale by auction at Messrs. Pliramer, Reeves, and Co.'s store, the following prices were obtained:—ll tons Hay and Barr's flour, £ls to £ls 2s Cd: 20 tons Anderson's, £l3 10s to £l4 10s for sacks and bags; 20 sacks oatmeal, £l7 5s per ton; 20 sacks pearl barley, 16s and 16s 6d; bran, lOd per bushel: sharps, £C 5s per ton; 150 sacks chicken wheat, 3s lOd to 4s Id per bushel; oats, 3s 9jd per bushel; 5 cases haras, 7jd per lb; bacon, 4sd; potatoes, 19s. per ton. MELBOURNE WOOL REPORT. Messrs. Geldsbrough and Co., under date October 24, 1877, report as follows;—“Wool: The opening sale of the season was held at our warehouses this day, and there was a crowded attendance of the trade, English, Continental, and American firms being largely represented in addition to the local buyers. The biddings opened with great spirit, and were well sustained throughout the sale, 2404 bales being sold • out of 2589 bales catalogued. With the exception of one small clip of 3 bales greasy, all the lots were of an ordinary to average description ; and taking this into account, excellent prices were realised, the rates obtained being fully equal to the average of last year. Greasy ranged from Gijd to Is Okl, and inferior to average fleece from Is 3d to Is 9jd per lb. These prices cannot fail to be highly satisfactory to owners, and no doubt a very large quantity of wool will be sold in this market. Sheepskins : Our sales held during the past week were well attended by the local trade, and we cleared out a full supply at about late rates. The market is firpi at quotations, viz., butchers’ skins, 3s Cd to 6s 6d each; dry skins, of average size and quality, 3|d to od per lb; do, superior, 5d to 7id per lb. Hides; We have no change to report in*the tone of this market, and inferior and medium lots are difficult to quit. There is, however, a good demand for superior lots at quotations as follows Average ox hides, 13s to 2Sa each ; cow hides. 15s to 22s 6d each ; Victorian salted. to per lb ; New Zealand do, 4d to 5d per lb. Tallow ; The tone of this market continues weak, about late rates being obtained at our sale held yesterday. The supply offering is limited.
