CITY COUNCIL.

The following report of the Public Works Committee was read aud adopted at the meeting on Thursday evening: “ 1. On report of Inspector of Nuisances of 30th October, — (1) Re insufficient accommodation at Pound, and suggesting enlargement or subdivision by another fence—Recommended that a dividing fence be put up. (2) Re materia], &c., on Custom House-quay—Recom-mended that it be an instruction to the Inspector to get Custom House-quay immediately cleared of all material, &c., lying on it, and that he enforce the charges already agreed on. ’ “ 2. On consideration of letter from the Wellington Volunteer Artillery, offering to take the time-gun up to Mount Victoria for the sum of £25, the committee recommend that this offer be accepted. “ 3. On application of Mr. S. W. Alcorn, the committee recommend that he be allowed half water rate on his premises for four months during which rebuilding is going on. “ 4. On application from nine of the Corporation employes, as members of the Wellington Fire Brigade Police, asking permission to attend all fires that may occur during working hours, —the committee cannot recommend that their request be granted. “5. A letter from Mr. Bannatyne, of 15th October, addressed to the acting city surveyor re wooden breastwork adjoining his property inHobson-street; and on reading the surveyor’s report suggesting certain precautionary measures at an estimated cost of £8, —the committee recommend that the work be done. “ 6. On Surveyor’s report, of 30th October, re letter Messrs. Box and others, and suggestina a alight alteration in the culvert in Donald McLean-street, . estimated to cost £lo— Also suggesting a slight alteration in the level of Tasman-street now being formed, estimated to cost £2o—Recommended. “ 7. On letter from Mr. C. White on behalf of the owners of land at KiUbirnie. asking for permission to make, at their own cost, a road through the Town Belt to that township, and on hearing a verbal explanation from Mr. White, —the committee recommend that the request be granted provided that the road be made and fenced in on each side to the satisfaction of the City Surveyor. “ 8. On report of Mr. Climie, re drain for Xngestre-atreet, estimated coat £127 10a., the committee cannot recommend the expenditure, but suggest that asphalte gutters be put down. “9. On letter from-Colonel Moule, in reply to an application for six months’ rent, of market hall, and for reasons stated therein declining to recognise the claim, —tho committee recommend that the lease of the hall be put up to auction at the reserve price lately fixed on, and on the same conditions as the other portions of the block. “ 10. The Town Clerk was instructed to take proceedings against the proprietors of St. George’s Hall, they not having complied with the conditions on which a license can be issued. “Jl. On petition praying that a portion of Hanson-street, situate between Drummond and John streets, ho formed, the committee recommend that the work be done if the cost will not exceed £2OO. “12. On report of Inspector of Nuisances, dated Gth inst,, pointing out the nuisance arising from blood, bone, and tripe boiling, the committee recommend that tho Inspector put the by-law in that behalf in force whereever the above business is carried on in such a manner as to be a nuisance to the neighborhood. “13. Letter received from Dr. Lemon, of 6th inst., consenting on behalf of the New Zealand Telegraph Department to the tower in Boulcott-street being connected by telegraph with the two fire brigade stations. In connection with this matter Mr. O’Neill was instructed to obtain a written agreement from the proprietors of the tower as to the tenure of occupation by the Council, and other matters already agreed on as to alterations, &c. “14. The committee recommend that the Town Clerk be instructed to write to the Colonial Secretary, and urge the attention of the Government to the request, made in July last, that the Contagious Diseases Act might he brought into force in the city. “ 15. Recommended that the City Solicitor’s attention he drawn to the houses of Messrs. Bragg, Asher, and Flannigan, in Willis-street, for the removal of which ho has already received instructions to take proceedings. “IC. Accounts amounting to £521 14s. 7<3.
