(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Wednesday. The schooner Wave of Life, from Rarotonga, brings news of the death of Queen Pomare, at Tahiti. Mabterton, Wednesday. A man, name unknown, was drowned in Waingawa River on Monday. Christchurch, Wednesday. G eorge Donne, present lessee of the right of advertising on nine railway lines, has become lessee of the same right on all Canterbury and North Otago lines. The lease covers 400 miles and eighty stations. Dunedin, Wednesday. On Saturday next the members of the City Council will visit Silver Stream, Water of Leith, and Waitaki to ascertain by personal inspection the best means of extending the water supply to this city. Hugh McNeal, on behalf of the Town Belt Defence Committee, has written to the City Council that as far as the committee is concerned they will not offer any objection to the Dover Hospital being on the Town Belt till the end of the present year, if the Council will give its assurance that it will then be removed. The General Government has consented to carry out the arrangements made by the Provincial Council to lay out as a garden the reserve around the new Museum. The I’inance Committee of the City Council has reported that the cost of supervising public traffic in Dunedin is much greater than the amount of fees received. Waters and Tolfer, of Dunedin, drew the first prize—£looo—in one of the Hokitika sweeps on the Melbourne Cup. ,

Geetmocth, Wednesday. The greatest flood ever experienced in the Grey River took place on Sunday, when the river .was higher than was ever known before. But little damage was done in town, as the harbor works stood admirably, but up the country there was great havoc done to the fences, the live stock, bridges, &c. No coaches are yet able to travel on the Reefton road, miles of it being covered with fallen timber The river has cut a new channel to the sea, about half a mile south of the previous one. CHRISTCHURCH RACES. Chrisi church, Wednesday. The Metropolitan meeting was continued to-day. The weather was variable, and one slight shower fell. The attendance was exceedingly large. The racing was much better than on the previous day, and the bookmakers had much better times of it. Ariel’s victory in the Cup race was a great piece of luck for them. He was not backed for much, while Trump Card carried pots of money, and Templeton had a good many friends. Ariel was scarcely taken in a double or treble, Trump Card and Mata being in nearly all of them. Ariel was loudly cheered ou returning to the scales. After a lot of trouble caused by Mireille, a good start was effected, Jangler at once going first, Chokebore second, and Oberon third. After passing the stand Mireille rushed to the second place. When opposite the stand Oberon ran up to Jangler, and the two sailed away from the others. On entering the straight Jangler and Oberon were together, but on nearing the rails Jangler drew away, and won by two lengths ; Chokebore ten lengths behind Oberon. Time, 2min. 46 J secs. Betting ; Even agst Trump Card and Mata, 2 to 1 agst Templeton, 4 to 1 agst Ariel. The lot got away to an indifferent start, Trump- Card losing several lengths. Chancellor made the running at a good pace, followed by Templeton, Ariel third. They passed the stand in this order, Mara being close upon Ariel, while Trump Card was gaining fast. At the second turn Trump Card went to the front, Chancellor and Templeton dropping back, and Mata taking second place, with Ariel on his quarters. Coming into the straight Ariel, passing Mata, challenged Trump Card for the lead, and the two raced neck and neck till the last distancepest, when Ariel drew ahead, improved his position at every stride, and won easily by four lengths, Trump Card six lengths ahead of Mata. Templeton was completely outpaced, and Chancellor, who never was in the race after the first mile, walked in. Time, 4min. lljsec. SPRING STEEPLECHASE, Of 100 sovs, added to a sweepstakes of 6 sovs.. About three miles. Brittain’s Royalty, list (McGouky) 1 Thompson's Ivanhoe, list 21b (Joyce) .. 2 Shadbolt's Faugh-a-Ballagh, lost 71b (Shadbolt) .. 3 Fakir, Shillelagh, and Zetland also ran. Betting : 2 to 1 agst Royalty, 3 to 1 agst Fakir and Zetland, 4to 1 agst Ivanhoe. The race for three-parts of the way lay principally between Faugh-a-Ballagh, Shillelagh, and Ivanhoe, when Shillelagh came to grief. Royalty then went up and took the lead. At the double jump in the last round Royalty came to grief. Soon after Fakir broke down. Ivanhoe struggled hard to catch Royalty, but the latter won easily by four lengths, Faugh-a-Ballagh a good third. George Smith, a station hand, was sentenced this morning by the Resident Magistrate to forty-eight hours imprisonment for obtaining a bed and breakfast from Frank W. Evans, of the Rangitikei Hotel, and absconding without payment. The practice is becoming very common, and this case has been tried as a caution to others, and for the benefit of the trade.
