The weather was very fine till shortly after the Derby race, when a heavy hailstorm came up from the S.W., with hailstones about § of an inch in diameter. The storm only lasted a few minutes, and the weather was fine for the rest of the day. Trains ran for the first time direct to the course, depositing the passengers at the back of the grand-stand. The branch line is over three-quarters of a mile long, and cost about £3OOO. It was constructed by a private company. The telegraph station on the course was also used for the first time, but did not prove of much advantage, there only being one wire, and messages therefore got away slowly. The attendance was scarcely so large as last year, but was very good considering that the traffic on the Northern Railway was interrupted by recent floods. The racing was not so good as was expected, the favorite in most instances winning easily. The bookmakers lost a lot of money. Trump Card was backed straight out in the Derby for a very large amount, and most of the doubles were Trump Card for the Derby and Mata for the C J.C. In the Handicap more doubles were pulled off to-day than for many years. A good many trebles were also laid, with Trump Card for the Derby, Mata for the C.J.O. Handicap, and Guy Fawkes, Mata, or Templeton for the Cup. Altogether to-day has been a good one for the backers. The pot’ boiled over in the Railway Plate, for which Bribery was freely backed, but iu all the other races the favorites won.
