RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Monday, November 5. (Before H. S. Wardell, Esq., 8.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Charles Wilson, charged with the above offence, was discharged with a caution, he having been locked up since Saturday afternoon. FALSE PRETENCES. Edward Tyler was brought up on remand charged with having obtained from Benjamin Cohen various articles of jewellery, by means of a valueless cheque, on the 10th September last. Benjamin Cohen, jeweller and pawnbroker, Willis-street, stated that the prisoner came to his shop on the day mentioned, and purchased one set of studs, two solitaires, and one collarbutton, the value of which amounted to £3 15s. He asked for a blank cheque on the Bank of New South Wales, but as witness had none he gave him one on the Bank of New Zealand, which, on being altered, prisoner signed and handed to witness as payment for the goods. The cheque was returned from the bank marked “no account.” Witness made enquiries, and found that the prisoner never had an account at the bank. K. C. Ewing, teller at the bank, deposed that he knew the prisoner by sight, and that he had no account at the bank. The further hearing of the case was adjourned till the following day. FORGING A MONEY ORDER. Arthur Barnsley was charged on remand with having on the 25th May last forged a money order for £lO, purporting to have been sent by J. Mills, of Dunedin, to J. Wilson. Dr. Lemon, General Manager of the Telegraph Department; George Douglas, clerk ; and John Gell and Henry Hawk, operators, gave evidence ; but owing to the absence of Miss Carpenter, the third operator, through illness, the further hearing of the case was adjourned until Wednesday, ASSAULT. Edward Hughes, on the above charge, was further remanded for a week. PROTECTION ORDER. The application of Matilda Biddle for a protection order against her husband was withdrawn on payment of costs. pawnbroker's license. The application of Benjamin Cohen for a pawnbroker's license was granted.
