THE WATER SUPPLY IN HOPPERSTREET.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAXD TIMES. Sib, I notice by advertisement that the mains are charged at 8 p.m., and the water shut off at 8 a.m. This may be so in some parts of the city, but, until to-night, the water has been shut off from my house day and night for two and three days together. I should have had none again to-night, but that, having noticed the wooden top of what is generally known as the " Toby" kicking about the street for the last fortnight or so, I thought I would try if I could not turn it on there myself. It turned easily enough (any child might turn it), and I got some water—the first for two days. I suppose there is somebody whose duty it is to see that the cocks are kept in order, and not left conveniently fo;~ anyone to turn on and off at pleasure, or out of mischief ; and perhaps, if you will kindly insert this letter, this " somebody" may devote a little more time to the duties for which, I presume, he is paid. The least a man can expect if he pays for water is that he should' get it.—Yours, &e., HoPPEB-STBEET. November 2.
