Mr. MoMichael’s property at Hawera has bean purchased by Mr. Lucena, late of Featherston, Wairarapa. Mr. W. H. Lyon, one of the Board of American Indian Commissioners, reports the usual rate of progress of the “ Bed Man ” in civilisation.. Of 266,000 Indians in the United States, he says 54,117 occupy houses ; 104,818 wear citizens' clothing ; they have 117 church buildings, 344 schools, 437 teachers, and 11,328 scholars ; they cultivate, 318,194 acres of land, and produce 463,000 bushels of oats and 2,329,463 bushels of corn ; and they own 301,033 horses, 311,308 horned cattle, 447,295 sheep, and 214,078 hogs. Doubtless these figures aro not exaggerated, but so far as_ they relate to industry,- education, and religion, they are mainly confined to the tribes located in the Indian territory, including the Cherokees, Choctaws, and Creeks, who were originally among the most intelligent and industrious of the aborigines, and have long been noted for their progress in civilisation. %By a recent Act passed’in England a considerable change has been made in the conduct of the business of the Ecclesiastical Courts, solicitors being now allowed to practise in them, a privilege hitherto confined to the advocates and proctors.
