These limits include the water frontage within half a mile of Somes Island. A requisition to Dr. Diver, signed by 63 ratepayers, appears incur advertising columns, asking him to allow himself to be nominated for the vacant seat in the City Council. One of the oldest settlers in the colony, Mr. Fitzgibbon, chief postmaster at Christchurch, and formerly at the Thames, died on Thursday last. Mr. Fitzgibbon both in his public and private capacity was much and deservedly esteemed by .a wide circle of friends. This event takes one more from the gradually narrowing circle of old colonists, amongst whose ranks death has been very busy of late. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, H. S. Warded, E-q., on the bench, Mrs. Mulligan was charged with assaulting Mrs. Blake. Mr. Fitzherbert appeared for the complainant, and Mr. Gordon Allan for the defendant. Mrs. Blake stated that on Saturday, the 22nd September, she went into the shop of Mr. Mulligan, jeweller, Lambton-quay, to get a brooch repaired, and that Mrs. Mulligan made a violent assault upon her without any provocation. It appeared from the evidence for the defence that Mrs. Blake was creating a disturbance in the shop, and that it was found neodssary to expel her from the premises. It was alleged that that was the only violence used towards Mrs. Blake. His Worship accepted this view of the case, and dismissed the complaint, with costs. The hare and hounds meeting, promoted by the Athletic Club, which was postponed last Saturday in consequence of the unfavorable state of the weather, will take place to-day. A large number of civilians were present at the station, and along the line of route. Last evening the popular Irish drama “ Eileen Oge” was performed for the benefit of Miss Willis and Mr. Keogh, who played the parts of Eileen and Bryan O’Farrell very creditably, and were well supported.
