WELLINGTON COLLEGE SPORTS.

The annual athletic sports in connection with the Wellington College were held on the Basin Reserve yesterday. There was not a large attendance of the public present, but there was a fair number of competitors for the various events, which were on the whole well contested. An impromptu race created not a little interest, the competitors being Mr. Wilson, Principal of the College, Mr. Graham, Secretary of the Education Board, Mr. Butts, Chief Postmaster, Mr. Hardy, and Mr. Holmes, Masters in the College, Mr, Gore, Secretary of the Philosophical Society, and Mr. Andrew Young, who it is well kuown takes a great interest in all sporting matters. The distance was one hundred yards, there was a good start, and the contestantskeptwell together during the race. Mr. Gore came in first, Mr. Wilson second, and Mr. Young third. The baud of the City Rifles arrived some time after the sports commenced, and enlivened the proceedings during the afternoon. The first event on the programme was a Hop, Step, and Jump (all ages).—lst prize, a photographic album, J. Taylor, 37ft. 7in.; 2nd, an album, J, C. Webb, 36ft. 9in. Seven competed. Elat Race, 100 Yards, for youths under 14. Ist prize, set of draughtsmen, C., Bid well; 2nd, photographic album, H. Gore. Nine started. Throwing the Heavy Hammer (all ages).— Ist prize, inkstand, A. Kirk. • Half-mile Handicap, all ages.—lst prize, silver cake tray, A. Cooper (scratch); 2nd, pair of opera glasses, Webb (10 yards). There were fourteen competitors for this event. Time, 2min. 27secs. Three-legged Race, 100 yards, under 14. Prize, two pencil cases, Dransfield and Young. Retrogade Blind Race, 80 yards (all ages).— Ist prize, writing desk, A. Martin ; 2nd, marmalade jar, A. Cooper ; 3rd, blotting case, R. Leckie. Fifteen started. One Mile Walking Race (all ages).—lst prize, box of water colors, A. W. Morrah ; 2nd, opera glass, J. C. Webb. Time, 9min. 27seo. Three-legged Race, 100 yards, boys over 14. —Prize, two marmalade jars, Cooper and Webb. Hurdle Race, 100 yards, six leaps (all ages.( —lst prize, case of mathematical instruments, Cooper ; 2nd, chess board, Taylor. Old Boys’ Race, 220 yards—lst prize, silver mounted mug, G. Bishop; 2nd, C. Webb. Time, 27secs. Consolation Race.—For Ibis event there were over a dozen starters. Snow came in first, Luxford second, and Ludwig third. This was the last race on the programme, and at its conclusion Mrs. R. Wilson distributed the prizes to the successful competitors. .
