Entries for the Jockey Club Handicap and Steeplechase close on Friday next. Miss Young, an American star, has arrived from Australia under engagement to De Lias. Wanganui, Wednesday. At the Supreme Court Charles Ellis was convicted of horse-stealing, and sentenced to two years’ hard labor ; Charles Francis, stealing money from the person, six months ; Walter Watson Barron, convicted of forgery, a man of weak intellect, was sentenced to imprisonment for one day ; Charles Fish, charged with felony, was acquitted ; Joseph Clark, found guilty ef stealing goods, got six months ; George Slight, charged with sheep-stealing, was found not guilty. The Lyttelton water supply works were handed over by the Government to the Corporation to-day, and officially opened. The day has been kept as a holiday. There was a dinner at the Odd Fellows' Hall in the evening, and the day’s proceedings were brought to a close by a torchlight procession and display of fireworks. Timaiid, Wednesday. The Relief Fund Committee met last night. £326 11s. 6d. was collected. There is £IOO to" come in. It was resolved to forward £3OO at once to Christchurch. The meeting adjourned to Saturday. Dunedin, Wednesday. Larrikiuism is prevalent in South Dunedin, and last night some blackguards amused themselves in High-street by destroying fences and wrenching off fancy door knobs. Dr. Scott, professor of anatomy, has delivered his first lecture in Dunedin. Subject —“ The Hand in Animals.” Mr. Sperry was entertained at dinner last night. Among the toasts was “ The Deceased Provincial Government.” The High School Commission closed to-day. The report will be forwarded to the Minister of Justice when drawn up. Mr. A. Wills, latellnder-Secretary for Otago, has been appointed gold receiver at Naseby. A contractor named Bull was seriously hurt to-day at Musselburgh while attending a stone - crushing machine. Though he sustained severe internal injuries, it is expected that he will recover. The Italian Opera Company have left Melbourne for Otago. West Harber has been declared a borough under the Municipal Act of 1876. At the Waste Lands Board meeting to-day an influential deputation asked that from 12,000 to 20,000. acres of land should be thrown open for settlement at Waikawa. If such were done, they anticipated that a flourishing township surpassing Port Chalmers, would spring up there. The Board promised, to consider the request of the deputation.
