NATIVE OUTRAGE.
Grahamstown, Tuesday. An outrage was committed by Maoris on Sunday at a settlement on the Bast Coast near Mataora. Sergeant Russell and Constable Gordon, accompanied by a guide, went from Ohinemuri to arrest two natives, named Makutu and Te Nohi, for horse-stealing. They found the latter, and producing the warrant were proceeding to put the handcuffs on, when they were assaulted by a score of natives, and the prisoner ran away. The constables gave chase and caught the prisoner iu a creek. They were again set upon and beaten, and held down iu the creek until the prisoner Te Nohi escaped. Several shots were fired to intimidate the natives, hut were of no avail. The constables got away, secured their horses, and returned to Ohineuiuri beaten and bruised, and minus one revolver and a pair of handcuffs carried off by the natives. Inspector Thomson, of Auckland, has telegraphed to Wellington for instructions whether under the circumstances the offenders are to be followed up, or farther proceedings held over for the time.
