PRINCE OF WALES’ BIRTHDAY SPORTS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —I see by the local papers that the Prince of Wales’ Dirthday Sports this year are to be held on the Dasin Reserve, under the patronage of the Caledonian Society. Surely this must be a mistake, as I was informed nearly a fortnight ago that the ground had been secured for the cricket match Wellington v. Star, to be played on the 9th proximo, and again a few days ago I read in one of the papers that the" match would come off on the Dasin Reserve ; yet, what are the cricketers to understand by the above announcement ? Is it right that the latter should pay two men to repair the damage done by the football players during the winter months, only to find the ground cut up again by the athletes ? Are you aware, sir, that in one hour the spectators and competitors at the forthcoming sports will do more mischief to the turf (newly laid down) than all the cricketers would in three months i Furthermore, I think the cricketers, who have never, so far as I know, received any pecuniary assistance from the athletic clubs, have been rather ignominiously treated.—l am, &c,, Sdsses.
