Auckland, Thursday. As Roberts, the billiard player, was leaving in the Rotorua for the South, he was detained by a speedy summons at the suit of Keane, of the Thistle Hotel, for breach of agreement, by which he was to play only at Keane’s house. He was liberated on bail. The case will probably be settled. Nelson, Thursday. A smart shock of earthquake was experienced here at 8.50 last night. The direction apparently was S.W. and N.E. The weather was gloomy at the time. Christchurch, Thursday. A public meeting will be held on Friday evening to consider what steps sheuld be taken regarding the Indian Famine Relief Fund. : La whence, Thursday. Another shock of earthquake was felt last night at 9.30. The weather was very stormy at the time. Dunedin, Thursday. The Indian Famine Relief Committee have authorised the Mayor to forward £2OO to Madras as a first instalment. The annual meeting of the Otago District Committee, 1.0.0. F., M.U., was held last night. The income for six months was £3502. Charles Bright, the Free Thought lecturer, was entertained at a soiree and ball in the Temperance Hall last night. He leaves shortly for Auckland and Sydney. In the Supreme Court to-day Mr. George Cook complained of the remarks made by the editor of the New Zealand Jurist with reference to the case of Chalmers v. Clarke. Judge Williams pointed out that the Court could not interfere in the matter. Invercargill, Thursday. The usual weekly meeting of the Waste Lauds Board to-day lapsed for want of a quorum. Three members of the Board are also members of Parliament, and have been absent since the commencement of the session. The Chief Commissioner is in Dunedin on the High School Commission. The two remaining members of the Board were in attendance. Applicants from distant parts of the district are disappointed. Tijiard, Thursday. A meeting of the Harbor Board was held today. There were nine applicants for the office of engineer. Mr. Goodall, of Auckland, was appointed. Kdmara, Thursday. The case for the prosecution of Ryan was concluded to-day. The evidence was unimportant, except that of Dr. Atcheson, of Greymouth, who proved the skeleton to he that of a man. The prisoner reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at Hokitika in March, 1878. Napier, Thursday.

On the second day of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s Show the weather was fine, and the show was a great success. Over 2000 people were on the ground, and the sum of £l3O was taken at the gates. To-day the winners of the Champion Cups were ;—For thoroughbreds : Messrs. Watts and Farmer’s Papapa. . For mares : Mr. A. Buckland : and for draught, Mr. Van’s (late Canning’s) Dugdale. Mares : Mr. Bennett’s 5 year old, by Little John. Bulls : Mr. R. Russell’s King Henry. Cows : Messrs. Colman and McHardy’s Duchess of Edinburgh. Longwool rams: Mr. Dolbell. In imported Dudding (Lincoln) ewes Messrs. Coleman and McHardy took the prize with a provincial bred animal.
